Roof Ideas - Stirring the pot?
Discussion
I still have a love for the MX%, get 'em down in 5 seconds approach to roof technology but then I am also open to other ideas.
So far I have the following 'concepts', anyone think of anything better?
1. Leave as is targa and rear fold - up
2. As is but Surrey roof instead of targa (got this)
3. Rear section as is less the stays with a fabric and tubular framed front section to replace the targa panels operating like a tradition soft top from the hoop forward, modified clips and front bar to hold the roof up
4. Rear section as is less the stays, with solid front folding front section which is basically one, two or three 'across the car' sections in replacement of the previous two targa panels
5. Rear section as is (not sure about stays?) with a fabric only front section with a front bar and clips
6. Solid Top with boot lid size single removable panel
7. Modified roof that uses the boot lid with a fabric boot lid replacement (shut up ! idiot!)
8. Zip or press stud 'temporary roof' for use in emergencies only, roll it up

This would my preferred option but I think you might still need the stays. The front rail could be made from marine ply and use the existing clip set up to hold it in place.Very difficult to execute though because of the complex curves.
I have an MX5 hood frame so if anyone is stripping their upholstry out and would like to offer it up let me know. The shape of the rear corners of the window will the main issue.
Entering the realms of engineering fantasy- how cool would it be if somebody could do a Superamericana version? You would have to have a 1 piece targa and some clever dual-fold mechanism that folded the soft top down first then the second would drop the targa into the boot which had been re-hinged to open the other way. Probably cheaper to keep the S as it is & buy the Ferrari 575 Superamericana and get the bost of both worlds I suppose.
I wondered if you could fold the roof in two or three sections width ways so it sort of rolls and stays attached to the back pram section then it sits in the space behind the seats, when it is in the "up" postion where it hinges it could have seals to waterproof it and is stretched to reach the windscreen with a similar over centre catch arrangement to what is fitted on 1970s MGBs.
Sorry about the ramblings, that could all be shot down if the width wont fit into the tub behind the seats.
I assume the targa panels made it to you safely ?
