What are peoples thoughts?

I think its a bit pointless to spend £2k on something that my phone can do very well, and if I am out of coverage I have a stand alone tomtom.

Do people think the same or is it a "must have"?

don't get it then :-)

people always say, "but a car is worth 1k more with it come resale"

So you are still 1k down on the deal. Just makes the car easier to sell private, but if you plan to part ex not an issue.

only thing is you can only get Sports plus with PCM I think, which you will want if you are to spec PDK.

which does make fast shifts with PDK a 5.5k option !!!!!

but as you have not told us what car/spec you plan to order, hard to say.

Agreed on the fact it depends on the car - but other than a totally basic Boxster or an RS model I think it is a must have.

In reality, I think you will find a 991C4S for example would be very difficult to move on without navigation module installed, to the extend that it will be hit harder than the price of the initial installation.

If it was a few hundred then I don't see a problem.
I have navigation on my RS6 as standard and I have used it maybe twice that I can think of.
I had it on my 997, again very rare for me to use it.

I wouldn't consider a Macan without.

It depends if it can be retro-fitted, but I thnk you'll find it incredibly difficult to shift without it.

As an experiment, search autotrader for a Cayenne up to 3 years old, see how many are for sale. Then, put Nav in the keyword box and see how many come up, try the same with PCM too, then you'll get an idea how many we're spec'd with it and how much narrower the market will be if it's missing.

It is not just sat-nav that you lose by not ticking the box, check the spec-sheet before you make a final decision. This is one of the occasions where dealers do come in handy as they can tell you in detail.

£40 -> 50k car without Nav? I don't think so. PCM offers much more than just nav though, more of an integrated communications interface (phone, ipod, speed limit warnings, etc)

Also, as a nav unit it is actually very good even though I don't use it that often either, but I wouldn't want a car without it personally and that's nothing to do with re-sale

Hm.

We wont use it - that's for sure. I do very very limited mileage, I probably wont spend £2k on fuel in the time I own the car, so I just cant see the point.
If its worth £2k less come re-sale or trade in then I cant say as it will bother me as I paid £2k less for the vehicle.

The question is will it be worth less than that? Then its eating into the "saving".

PCM always is a 1k price change from non PCM cars.
as I said hard to sell private, makes no odds part ex.
you may even be 1k better off if you don't spec it.

just seems a odd buy over the 3 cars you already own to me if you plan NOT to use it much lol

the cars going to loose way more than worrying about if it has PCM or not buying new in the 1st place.

I think on a fairly new Macan it will make far more than £1K of difference.

Probably even more than the £2K cost.

Once it is 2 years plus the difference will start to reduce.

IF you are talking about spinning it on within the next 6 months then you might be OK as demand will outstrip supply enough for someone to 'take the lack of Nav on the chin' to get one early.

We've got the same dilemma, 2k is quite a big saving and can pay for some much more useful options. It is going to come down to how long you're keeping the car. In 10 years time these cars will be worth about 10k anyway and I can't see there being a 2k premium for nav cars.

Another consideration is the fact that technology has moved on since the dawn of sat nav in cars. Since iOS (the first iPhone came out in 07 and can't remember if it had maps then) and Android are mainstream now, it makes it more difficult to justify for any reason other than resale. Who knows where technology will go next and make the current systems even more outdated too... Just a question of when buyers stop placing a premium on it. The fact that this debate seems to be coming up more often suggests the tide may be turning.

Also in the case of the macan, it comes with CDR+ which includes universal audio interface and the same number of speakers etc and hi res screen - not like the difference in nav modules with BMW where you could not have a screen at all in non-idrive cars or a small screen in a space designed for a larger module. You're literally paying 2k for a nav module that isn't as up to date as a smartphone or cheap tomtom.

Are you sure about the 997? They have PCM as standard but I am pretty sure that the navigation module was an optional extra.

I would say spend the money on something else, the porshce sat nav i have seen is terrible, so spending £2k on something terrible is never a good idea.

I thought it was standard, car was a 997 2S.

I thought on the S you got PASM, PCM and Xenons as standard.

Stand to be corrected - it was a while ago!

Took delivery of a 981 Cayman a month ago in very low spec, glad I saved the cash and in particular the PCM as the car is great as it comes out the box. If you don't need it, don't bother- buy for you not the next person.

You guys do realise that without the PCM option you cannot plug your IPhone/Android or mp3 memory stick into the car?

That is a deal breaker for me on any car.

Like I said previously, its not just about sat-nav.

Don't have any of those things. I listen to the radio that's it.
My audi has a HDD for music, 2 x SD card slots and Ipod cable thing - all never used. Could not even tell you how it works!

Everyone is different I understand though.
We went for it without PCM.
Just no point for us, if its worth less in the end I think we will live with it.
