Stelvio will become a toll road in 2014.
Discussion
My sources on Stelvio tell me that it will be a toll road when it reopens in April. Price I've been told is a 'whopping' 1.60E.
I have no information about whether it's the Bormio or Prad side of Stelvio (or both), however I'm suspecting it's the Prad side as the Trentino local government has been threatening it for the last few years. The Bormio side has consistently invested in their side which is why you have a fabulous surface on one side, and not the other. That and the fact they persuaded the Cima Coppi to race up their side and got a bunch of grants.

Hi,
the history of the Stelvio-Toll is pretty long... it seemed ready for a start last year, but because of "organisation problems" (basically the region of Lombardy -Bormio side- does not agree on that) and also legal issues (a National Road cannot have a toll) it has been postponed.
Latest information from the Südtirol region dates back from May '13 and states as above...
The price however should be 5 or 10 €, depending on the source...

Well my source is the owner of a hotel on Stelvio who took the time and trouble to email me. However, if your sources are more reliable, then all the better. The price however should be 5 or 10 €, depending on the source...

Might well be that you are correct, I couldn't just find any official info... but that's not a surprise given the reliability of our politicians
I'll probably be in Bormio for the weekend, I'll ask around and see if anyone can confirm what the situation is
