How rare are 156 Sportwagens?
Discussion
As above really, looking to move on the Fiat Coupe for something a bit bigger to do some more miles in and I love the 156 wagon, particularly the later faced ones, preferably a 1.9/2.4D.
But there barely seem to any for sale nationally, they're all down at around £2-4k but in the proper spec with maunal, leather etc we seem to be down to less than 5 cars.
Are they really that rare? Anyone got experience in this market?

Rare is relative, really: not quite undiscovered Van Gogh territory, but they weren't available for as long as the saloons, & aimed at a smaller target audience, so fewer sales. Coupled with a small sales volume anyway (albeit good for a non German/Japanese in the UK...) &, yep, might be a wait to find the one you want.

I had a 2004 1.9 JTDm Sportwagon for two and a half years. I bought mine in 2010, it took me 6 months to find what I wanted then! Rare car the Sportwagon JTD facelift, be prepared to pay a premium and don't dither when a car comes up for sale as they get snapped up quick!

Why a base price of £2k? These cars are cheap - many under that price.
Also you can easily convert it to leather yourself for about £200-300, although the right spec (Veloce) with cloth is probably rare on its own.
Yes, definitely go for Veloce over Lusso or Turismo. The Veloce rides far better, the turismo's & Lusso's tend to roll a bit. Also you can easily convert it to leather yourself for about £200-300, although the right spec (Veloce) with cloth is probably rare on its own.
In the my experience the better cared for examples will cost a little more to buy. History is everything on these cars, fully documented history ideally. I would take a 100,000 mile example over a 50,000 mile car with the history and condition were right.
OP don't discount the higher priced cars.

My old SW has just come on the the market. It's done 12,000 miles since I sold it. It's on AT @ £3295.But there barely seem to any for sale nationally, they're all down at around £2-4k but in the proper spec with maunal, leather etc we seem to be down to less than 5 cars.

I've got a 156 facelift 2.4JTDm Veloce, I managed to pick it up early last year for under £2k. Since then I've spent a lot on it...
A new key is £330
New Belts and water pump & service £600 or so
a new clutch and flywheel £1100
But I've got a great car that will give nearly 50mpg if driven nicely, but also pulls like a train if you get a heavy right foot. They are very front heavy so don't corner as well as some of the competition but I can live with that. Its a fantastic looking car, a great place to sit. You get a lot of car for you money.
Edit - it says you are in the South West - if you are near Swindon you're welcome to have a look at mine. I can also give you the contact details of a very good Alfa mechanic

Cheers chaps, starting to wonder about increasing the budget a bit to a lower mileage option but there still isn't a lot of choice.
Forget the mileage focus on the care the car has had. Look for condition and history over what numbers are on the speedo. As I said earlier, my old car is for sale. That was an excellent car and when I parted with it I left all the receipts in the car, hopefully the last owner kept them.
I have just looked out of my window and seen a 156 Sportwagon, but that is not surprising as I own it. I see a few around, although not loads.
Mine is a 2001 2.5 Veloce. It is in pretty good shape overall, and the Momo seats are almost as new, but the steering wheel and gear knob show the car's age, as do a few small scratches and scuffs on the silver paintwork, and some mild bubbling on the clover leaf wheels. I like the V6 engine a lot, and although the handling is only good and not great, I have never been arsed to upgrade the suspension or whatever. I like the car and shall probably keep it until it falls to bits, unless the OP wants to try and tempt me.
