How much risk are you prepared to apply to your investment?

If you want a savings account at a bank then look through the list here:

http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/savings/savings-a...

If you want to invest it in stock and shares, etc. then speak to an IFA.

Best for what? Not trying to be flippant but there is a fair amount to consider and while you might get some anecdotal blather on here about one fund or other that some poster may (or may not) have bought and made a killing on, or which comics are a good bet, wouldn't you rather take advice from someone who is accountable for it?

Things to consider off the top of my head that are missing from your post: (and I would not recommend you replying in open forum!)

Age, health,
Personal financial position, assets/liabilities, income/expenditure household position etc
Experience
Aims/objectives
Tax position, Income/CGT
Family, anticipated expenditure
Attitude to Risk, Capacity for Risk, Requirement for Risk.

This sort of thing would help me work out what is "best" for YOU. no-one else on here knows this stuff so take their "advice" with the proverbial bucket of salt.

HTH!!

Was about to ask the same thing.

Seems a sensible enough question and as the OP, like myself, has spare cash sitting there not earning any interest, any ideas?

Personally I'm thinking PEPs, oops! shows my age, ISAs.

So my question: Would anyone recommend the ISAs they have so I can then research them. I have an old PEP that has tripled it's value but that is in about 15 years or more.

Currently my cash sits in an offset mortgage account with a 1.5% interest rate so it knocks about £60 a month off my payments. I realise that an ISA is a risk but can I do better?

Property is a no no as I can't borrow much more and although the amount could buy a house in a rundown area up north, it'll barely buy a garage around here.

So anyone having a good time with an ISA? Cheers.

Speak to a good IFA, you'll pay a fee for it but it'll be worth it if he/she is good

Cheers.

Problem is finding a good IFA. The few I have had dealings with, including the sod who sold me an endowment back in '88, have all been sharks, even my ex MiL's partner.

So buy a buy-to-let property up north. You'll have to pay a bit more to the agents if you don't want to bother with the maintenance etc. but it will still yield better than ISAs, bonds, etc.

Funnily enough a search in South London has come up with a flat in an area I know well, that has an AST tenant paying £675/month and it's up for £100,000. Must be a catch somewhere, as even tho' it's Croydon, that is very cheap.

According to Zoopla, it last changed hands in the early 2000s for £104,000. I know mates that lost a packet on their houses out in the provinces over the last 7 years or so but that is hard to believe within the M25.

Quick calculation says that is about a 8% return before tax and expenses.

Impossible question to answer without more info. If you're serious about getting it invested it would be well worth paying someone 1% to set you up a proper portfolio. The market can easily move 1% in a day (as it has today) so its not that much in the context of what you're investing. The IFA market is a totally differnet place to you're last experience in 1988, more heavuily regulated and commissions that could cause a conflict of interest have largely been outlawed. And no I'm not an IFA!

You sure it's not share of ownership?

I think rental yields are quite high in dodgy but convenient transport areas of south London (Croydon, Deptford, New Cross, etc.) but I wouldn't have thought that prices have dropped.

Probably has a very short lease. That will mean difficulty getting a mortgage. Freeholder probably wants silly money to renew it.

No mention of the lease in the advert, red flag.

Not had a very good track record with shares. I pulled out of some oil ones just before the Gulf War, after which they suddenly rocketed to 6x what I paid literally overnight frown and have stayed up there ever since.

Sitting on some Oil shares at the mo', a company drilling around the Falklands but they halved in value when that silly bint in charge started rattling her handbag.

Investing in an ISA now and again after April sounds like a good idea.

Been looking at this fund, Fidelity Special Situations. Alex Wright, who appears to have a good track record, has taken over managing it as of a couple of weeks ago.
