Hello all,
I have now tried out both the 3 litre tdi a6 and a4 quattro and am now close to buying the a4 but still tempted by an a6 I've seen.
My budget is £7,000 to £9,000. My research on this site and others for reliability (and from trying out as far as ride comfort is concerned,) is the 3 litre SE automatic avant quattro.
I am trying to pick the most reliable model and I am now basically looking for expert confirmation of my buying decision thoughts.
The following is the information on which this decision is based!
It should be a 2007 3 litre tdi se model thats done over 100,000 miles because:
1. The 3 litre has 1 turbo which is relatively easy to exchange/repair because it is just at the back of the engine and does not need to have the engine removed to fix it. Removal is 2 hrs? compared to the bi turbo 2.7 TDI which is an engine out job to fix. Are the tubos on the 2.7 a reliability issue?
2. Diesel because reasonable economy compared to petrol models and if over 100,000 miles should have had all issues resolved ?
3. It will not have a dpf (diesel particulate filter) .which I understand can give problems if the car is mainly used for short journeys. Dpf's were fitted to late 2007 or early 2008 models???. The lack of a dpf can be confirmed by looking for the sticker in the footwell that should have 7GN on it somewhere? Does anyone know when the dpf's were actually introduced on the 3 litre engines?
4. It is fitted with the tiptronic auto which is more reliable than the multitronic.
5. There were problems with the injectors on 3 litre engine earlier than 2006.
6. I need to look for water ingress in rear foot well and in cupholders or floor because of the issues with the washer pipe leaking and effecting the MMI.
7. The SE model has 17inch wheels with better ride comfort and cheaper tyre replacement than the s line
7. A friend of mine also happened to say that he thought they also had stainless steel exhausts as standard! Anyone know if that's true?

In one post it suggested that:
a) the tiptronic auto has problems with the torque converter. But I couldn't find any further details
b) their were issues with the cam lobes at 100,000 miles and
c) the catalytic converter Can give expensive problems on the 3 litre. Again I couldn't find any further information on this.

Any input on the above observations relating to engine and gearbox reliability on 100,000 2007 ish engines would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance
Bremar

The 2007 3.0 TDI may be in the higher VED bracket at this age, so £490 pa. Audi reduced the CO2 output around his time, so could be the £290.

The 2.7 is also a single turbo, lower performance, same running costs. The 2.7 you are referring to is the 2.7 petrol.

Economy wise, you'll see 20s in town, mid 30s on run, and low 40s on a motorway run. We regularly see low 40s, 4 up with a weeks baggage on a 260 mile motorway run.

The tiptronic is reliable, the multitronic has a massive thread on here about it's problems. The 3.0 doesn't come with the multi on the C6 A6, the 2.7 does.

There is no catalytic converter.

Correct about the injectors, but if a car has 100k on and isn't smoky, then they've probably been done.

We have 17" inch winter wheels on at the moment, and the ride is softer, compared to 19s. The larger wheels aren't as bad as the Internet says wink

Correct on the water ingress.

Never heard of any torque converter issues.

One more to add are manifold flaps, these can fail at around 60k. Ours is on 70k, and no sign of anything yet.......

There's often a debate on here about changing the gearbox oil at certain mileages, I'm really undecided on this.

There's plenty of A6 3.0 TDI owners on here, so you'll get plenty of good advice. smile

Ad 1) the 2.7 TDI is a single turbo too, IIRC same bore but different stroke version of a 3.0 TDI.

Apart from that you seem to have done your research even if a lot of it is based on "best case" scenario, e.g. an engine past 100K will not necessarily have had replacement of expensive parts, may very well be at 110 or 120K.

Good luck!

I am planning on selling my 3.0 A6 LeMans Quattro.

Its. 2007 car and is the lower VED. Its also just pre DPF.

I have owned car from new and put 115k miles on it. It still goes and feels like new. There have been no issues in the last 4 years. Phone module was replaced under warranty when the car was two.

There is no water ingress at all.

Average mpg is 36 best is 42 on a run.

Its a tough decision to sell but I am mainly driving on my own and its silly having a big car for one.

Mine is a saloon so not for you

Thanks. Its good to get some of this confirmed. 3 more points. I looked at an s line and the suspension does feel hard but it was a nice car.
1. I presume the suspension on is different and harder. It isn't just the 19 inch wheels?
2.You chaps mentioned that the 2.7 TDI only has 1 turbo. But is it still true that to change turbo on the 2.7 its an engine out job compared to the 3 litre which isn't.If there is no difference between the 2.7 and 3l then that broadens the choice for me considerably as I understand the 2.7 didn't have the injector problems.
3. On the point of the injectors does anyone know exactly when the problem with the injectors on the 3l was resolved as I've been invited to try out a friends late 2006 car.
Again thanks in advance.
(Its painful having the cash to buy and not knowing quite which one)

Suspension - it is lower and stiffer than, say, an SE. Decide if you can live with it, try the car on the roads you will drive every day. Smaller wheels will help, a bit.

As far as I know the turbo isn't an engine-out job on the C6 TDIs - it's a single unit, above the engine near the bulkhead. I'm happy to stand corrected. (iirc it's the C5 petrol 2.7 that is a 'mare in this respect)

Injectors? If they haven't broken yet you're probably fine. It's the inlet manifolds that you need to watch for. Repairs to these can range from a £9 linkage to £200ish a side for rebuilt manifolds - always try the £9 fix first.

Thanks shtu. Going to look at both a 2.7 and 3 l over next few days. If a turbo repair is not an engine out on either engine then apart from power there nothing to choose between the two engines.
How do I tell if theres as problem with the inlet manifolds what do I look for (apart from a receipt to say they've been changed)

Out of interest are you specially looking at cars with over 100,000 miles on the clock?

Not necessarily over 100,000 but that keeps them within my price bracket under is good too. Why do you want to sell me one?

Well my A4 Quattro is for sale, however I was interest in your view on high mileage as I'm looking to replace my A4 with either an A6 Avant or a 5-Series Touring. There seems to be plenty on the market with 90k plus mileage, and as you say, you get much more for your money at this mileage.

Hello

I have a 2006 2.7 tdi sline avant multi. Very happy with it and have had it for almost a year now, I was slightly disappointed with the power so had the remap done with Shark Performance http://www.sharkperformance.co.uk/ and it transformed the car. Went for the 2.7 as I found more choice for my budget and preferred the lower tax bracket / insurance.

I love the multi gearbox and think it suits the car well despite the negative posts, its all too common for people to talk of the negatives and few horror story's. I was a mechanic with 8 years in the trade and know a few Audi mechanics, spoke to them before hand and said don't worry about the box so long as it had its oil changes at 40k miles.

I get around 47 mpg with two dogs in and the car full to the roof with bags on a motorway run. Around town around 35mpg but if your heavy with the right foot expect a lot less.

Any specific question I would be happy to answer.

As above 2.7 has multitronic and 3.0 has the tiptronic. Take from that what you will. Maybe Audi know the multitronic couldnt handle the 3.0 that's why it has a stronger tiptronic box....

Have a4 avant 3.0 tdi sline quattro manual.

Bought with 112k 18months ago and now on 171.5k. Clutch needed changing when I bought it.

Has ab injector issue if left idling for a while in traffic it smokes from exhaust so I would let it idle for 15-20minutes, idle goes lumpy and smoke from exhaust.

I broke a rear spring, but use it for towing and it carries a boot full all the time.

Otherwise I cant complain.

38-42mpg across a tank calculated not from fuel computer.

Interesting, the Audi tech at my local stealer call it the "multichronic" due to the lack of reliability

You're not the only one who's been told that. My local independent said the same.

I was confused for a while. When you started talking about the multitronic.
I believed all 2.7 and 3 litre tdi quattros have the tiptronic.
Then I realised there had been a move to the petrol 2.7 I think.
Still the questions on my mind are
1.how do I tell if there is any thing wrong with the manifold and
2.if I buy a 2006 3l at what point did tgery sort out the injector issues in 2006. Is is there a good date in 2006 after which to buy.
Thanks bremar

Yes, like I say, I have heard horror stories yet good reports. Guess its just down to peoples experiences.

I dont know what to do, coz i relly liked the car, ijust dont want to be stuck with any unknow issue. Thank you for any reply
