Hi chaps, anyone know any nice pubs around the area? Willing to travel a little but not too far, prefer quiet country pubs so I'm thinking somewhere towards Wickham sort of way?? Just for a quiet drink with someone really smile

Many thanks

I met a friend from Portchester one evening earlier this week and we went to the Cams Mill. Seemed quite nice. Bigger, does food, sat on the waterside. Only had 2 drinks, but no reason not to go again.
Nice pork scratchings available out of a kilner jar.

For a good view and decent food try the Churchillian at the top of Portsdown hill. For scenery go to the Cormorant down by Portchester castle.

The new Cams Mill is good for food (Had Christmas Dinner in there on Christmas Day) but drinks are above normal pub prices.

The Kings Head in Wickham Square is OK, real log fire and plenty of different ales.

The 'Seagull' in Portchester is 'OK' and part of the Hungry Horse chain. Bar in one side that doesn't allow children and resultant/bar in the other. TV Screens everywhere and some pints reduced to £2 a pint when a live football match is on.

My local is the 'Wicor Mill' on White Hart lane. Strange bunch with a bad reputation but it's as safe as houses in there.

The Red Lion in the center of Portchester....Well....'Benefit Street'...

Churchillian has great views over Pompey and the Downs to the rear, stinks to high hell on the inside though. Worth braving the bar to take your beer outside though Ross.

Local Jag club have their monthly meeting on the 1st monday of the month, been to one in November i think, might be something for a summer night when you can actually see!!

ahhhhhh, those summer nigh---hiiiiiighttssssss, tell me more, tell me more!thumbup

Used to play darts in the Wicor Mill, the White Hart and the Seagull. Not sure I'd strongly recommend any of them to be honest! (depends on what you like though - certainly cant recommend the White Hart as its no longer there is it?!).

Is the Cormorant still going? That was always a lovely pub.

Interesting you say that as both are Fullers pubs. I have always found that their prices are a little over the odds although the pubs themselves are generally nice places to sit.

I always enjoy the view at the Osborne view at hill head. Been wanting to try cams mill I've seen the photos and it looks nice. Wickham wine bar can be pricey and can get very busy at a weekend but it is a nice setting although haven't been in a few years (randomly I used to work there for a while in the kitchens) I wouldn't go to the church ilia nor any of the other portchester pubs. I also like going to the vanguard in Fareham a lot of places to hide away and chat. But it doesn't have the country feel I like. Luckily living in north hampshire I have a fine choice of pubs to choose from.

Osborne View is a lovely view but it's quite a way from Portchester. As for Vanguard, wow!!!!!!!!!?!

It's about 1 mile further than Wickham. The vanguard during the day is fine, so would assume its similar Sunday - Thursday evening?

Fair enough.

Horses for courses but if I asked for a nice quiet country pub near Portchester and someone recommended a rough st tip of a youth club in the middle of a town I wouldn't be all that impressed. I can't honestly think of many pubs worse than Vanguard off the top of my head. Just goes to show, one man's meat is another's poison.

The Vanguard is awful.

Osborne View yes, as long as you are planning to go either on a weekend or after 7pm on a weekday, else forget getting into the area before that time and after 4pm.

Wouldn't recommend the Cormorant in Portchester personally, was a great pub back in the day but not now. Rest of the pubs in "Portchy" aren't really up to much so I'd choose elsewhere, not sure on Cams Mill yet as heard mixed reviews from people.

My choice would be The Wheatsheaf just past Wickham on the Botley road, it is about 200 metres or so after turning off on the right hand side (car park is across the road). The beer is outstanding and is brewed at their other pub in Cheriton, food is good as well plus it is an authentic Hampshire country pub.

If you like proper beer and a nice country ambience you won't go far wrong.

The Wheatsheaf is a great shout.

Sad to hear the Cormorant has gone downhill. Used to be a real gem of a pub and welcome given the surrounding pubs weren't particularly pleasant.

Portchester isn't pleasant tongue out I often get dragged to the seagull as it's close to my sisters and cousins certainly not somewhere I enjoy visiting.

The vanguard is my pick for a pub within walking distance of the parents. Although I rarely go there. Luckily I'm gifted with a lot of nice pubs up my way.

I know that only too well. Had my motorbike nicked in Castle Street frown

If you can walk to the Vanguard from your folks you can walk to the Cob & Pen in Wallington too wink
