Road trip to Italy
Discussion
from memory we did this route (if I recall correctly!)
http://goo.gl/maps/PXrfQ
didn't stop in Como but close (12km away) on the way to the Italian F1 last September.
took us 2 days 2 of us driving.
if we had missed out the passes we could have done it in a day I think.
Don't refuel in Switzerland, it more expansive.

Thats an interesting thought someone else mentioned Sardinia to me
For Sardinia it's best to use the ferry from Genoa to Porto Torres and use either the St Bernard or the Simplon and Como is just a short detour on the route. When you get there this is just one of my favourite driving roads to/from the east coast. It's a bit like the American West but without the American traffic law.XJ Flyer said:
Don't overlook the Islands like Sardinia and Sicily you get the combination of a sea trip on the Med with some of the best traffic free driving roads in Italy so long as it's June or early July.

This is some of the North West Coast just down the road from the ferry terminal.

It includes write ups of other PHers Euro road trips, should give you lots of ideas for routes.
Personally I would be heading through Germany (Possibly stop at the Nurburgring), through the black forrest, through the Alps and to lake Como.

As in wait for Italy? Had quite a shock when we didn't refuel in Austria and saw the first station in Italy. Even from the below link; Italy 1.766/Ltr vs Switzerland 1.469/Ltr.Don't refuel in Switzerland, it more expansive.

It would be a very unusual situation in which petrol could be found cheaper in Italy than Switzerland or Austria. As a rule it's always been best to fill up in Luxembourg,Switzerland or Austria where possible with Swiss petrol being relatively even cheaper when the Swiss exchange rate was much better than now.The relative price difference between Italy and everywhere else was once so bad that the Italians had a discount scheme using coupons for foreign tourists bought from the local motoring organisations in our case the AA.

not from what I recall, we came across a few places with cheapish diesel
It appeared in Switzerland that everybody was selling it for exactly the same price,
but I could be wrong getting old ! mind going.
Ah, ok thought you were talking about petrol. It appeared in Switzerland that everybody was selling it for exactly the same price,

I confirm that in Switzerland Diesel is more expensive than petrol and -depending on currency exchange- it can be cheaper in Italy (and far cheaper in Austria or Germany) than Switzerland.
Hope you enjoyed your stay in our surroundings

We went to Como last summer, via Geneva to see a friend. We stayed in Bellagio, then went down to Verona for the opera, and on to Croatia.
If you cut through Switzerland, you don't need to pay the Vignette (CHF50ish) if you're not going to use the motorways. With Alpine passes to play with, this was no great hardship.
If you do make it to Croatia, you might want to take a look at the driving route used by the Porsche travel club. We drove some of the Adria Magistrale.

First stopped for the night in Paradiso outside Lugano
and then moves on around and had a great afternoon in Interlaken, had some great food at the Hooters looking out at the mountains.
Would love to go back this year but we'll have to see.
