What is the best way to go about a speculative application to a big company? I'm not sure what the etiquette would be. Would it just be a case of a brief cover letter explaining the reason for the speculative application and why you think you are suited to their company?

Also who do you advise sending it to, a generic HR@***.co.uk or find a direct contact to send it to?

Thanks!

You have nothing to lose if you've not managed to get in via the conventional route (and if you haven't tried the conventional route (applying for a posted vacancy), some would say you should first). Be careful not to sound desperate and make sure you explain fully what your USP is and what role you think you would be suitable for in their organisation. You could send it to both HR and the senior manager of the department you think you'd be best suited to. Good luck!

Unfortunately there is no conventional route available; they have no listings for the job I would be after. It's definitely a case of 'cold calling' asking for consideration for a position within that department.

Thank you for your input!

Get on LinkedIn and find the best contact, either ring them or email them asking for a chat about a role that they forgot to advertise that you're perfect for

Thank you for this suggestion. Interesting way to think about it, asking for a chat about it instead of just firing off a CV!
