Given that PH generally proves to be the best possible source for such things, can someone provide the above please.

We'll probably be staying at Hotel Du Vin Church Street, Birmingham B3 2NR or nearby and would like an evening meal near there. Criteria:

  • Up to £80 per head inc wine.
  • Not Indian
  • Quality rather than quantity.
Thanks in advance for the excellent suggestions!

Note: Equally a suggestion for somewhere better than HdeV welcome, but we fancy giving that a try.

Opus and Purnells are both within walking distance. Food in HdV isn't too bad.
San Carlo is is good but can be crowded and a bit old fashioned, Fumo is a tapas place part of San Carlo and much more modern

Opus looks good, nice choices of meat and fish which suits all palates.

I'd say Opus is best for food, Purnells for ambience and Marco's for being on top of a big building with good views. So mamy choices in the city though

There's Simpson's too, http://www.simpsonsrestaurant.co.uk/

Found Marco's food to be 'ok' for the price, but the views on a clear night are a novelty. There's some nightlife around the canal too, if you're feeling up for it after dinner.

Simpsons looks good too but Opus's menu seems more suited to a fish eater.

Instead of standing in the cold and damp on bonfire night we went to Marco's instead (2 years ago) and I must say what a fantastic idea of mine. Was a clear night with spectacular views, good food and drink with good company.

Opus is very nice.

But the fish I've had at San Carlo is very good

Opus is great, Simpsons is outstanding (though it may be out of budget this time), I don't understand why San Carlo is so popular at all - I've only ever found it to be average, and another nice place nearby HdV I which you may like to consider is Metro.

There's also plenty of choice in and around The Cube, including the hotel, Marco's, along with the canal side restaurants and bars nearby. Certainly if you're bringing the car, the Cube's automated car park might be a more practical option than finding parking around HdV.

Enjoy!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. We ate at Opus and whilst the service and ambiance were okay rather than great the food was superb. One of the best meals we have had in recent memory.
