Please can someone advise me the mechanical differences between an early 996 turbo 04/98 and the later cars.
I am aware of the face lift differences its more the mechanical and reliability of an early car with 90k

04/98?

They came out in 2000 with a facelift for MY2002 (built/registered from approx Sept 01). Main differences are a glovebox and cup holder.

Not sure what you mean by 04/98?

996 Turbo's started approx 2000, as stated above there were mild interior additions from 2002 onwards, but nothing more. Cup holders, Sat Nav (Which is terrible) / Bose became standard rather than options.

Mechanically 2000 - 2004 Turbo's are all indentical unless the X50 option was ticked, in which case you have K24's and slightly bigger intercoolers. There's mention, but I've never seen anything reliable confirming it (?) that X50's also had slightly different exhausts and gearing.???????

As I say, I've never seen or heard these reliably confirmed.

Sorry was incorrect with date of registration. so all the mechanicals are the same from introduction up until 2005/6

There were factory options such as suspension and turbos that might differ, but I'm sure you can bolt an engine out of an early car into a later one.

I thought that the bodyshell had additional bracing to improve rigidy and crash protection from 2002 model year?
