I might be asking the impossible here,
but cultural things like museums, galleries, stately homes etc.

No shopping venues and nothing too chavtastic, please.
I am trying to impress her indoors.

I did look at the De Havilland museum near to South Mimms,
but that's shut until March and we've already done Duxford,
way up the M11. Bletchley Park, MK too far really.

There's the 'secret' nuclear bunker at Kelvedon Hatch - http://www.secretnuclearbunker.com/

If you're feeling a touch energetic, you could try the Olympic White Water rafting course - have done this a couple of times and it's great fun - http://www.visitleevalley.org.uk/en/content/cms/lo...

The oldest log church in the world (I kid you not!) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greensted_Church

RAF Museum at Hendon is not too far away and well worth a visit.

You could always do Cambridge, stacks of cultural stuff there, plus you could have a meal and do some shopping.

Just don't use the multi-storey car parks, the cost will ruin your day! Park and ride I'm afraid

I was thinking that myself.

Secret Nuclear Bunker at Kelvedon Hatch a cracking day out but
we've done that already. I've checked the subterranean Britain
website (http://www.subbrit.org.uk/) and there's not much
else near.

Cambridge too far. North Weald airfield museum shut for the winter.

Thanks for all your suggestions. The search goes on.

We have a winner ! It was a cracking day out.

Free entrance with overpriced drinks and food in the canteen to compensate.
Bring your own flask and sandwiches if you want to save some money.

Park in a nearby sidestreet to save even more on car parking charges, too.

I went last year and arrived about 12 and only just managed to get round all the exhibits. We were the last visitors in the Blitz area, all alone in a very emotional and thought provoking exhibit. I'm going to head over again this year and allow a bit more time to get round.
