Quite surprised myself with the finish. Just done a couple of CX mirrors to match after rubbing down stone chipping and repairing cracks. The rattle cans I used to use ten years ago, blocked up and spattered. This was a very different experience - only the most pedantic would be able to see the slightest of slight orange peel. Must admit, its encouraged me to move onto stone chips in the under-chin of the bonnet!

Must agree , I have recently finished spraying my whole car with around 30 of these, a little polishing with T-Cut and a finish I am very happy with for just a few hundred not a few thousand for a professional respray. I used to work as a body repairer but its not that difficult if you take your time with preparation !

Steve, you need to take your car or a sample piece to Colourtone.
They will mix you up a perfect match.

S2 Mike, I can vouch for the amazing results you've achieved using aerosol cans,
Anyone would be hard pressed to tell it wasn't an expensive professional respray

Remarkably good colour vision there and correct. I am trialling a few shades. Started looking at TVR paint codes and yes, its a bit of a nightmare. Not sure i'll be keeping the existing colour and I'm not convinced its the original colour anyway (there are a couple of patchwork areas where its evident work has been done before). The handbook cites B-R-G which I thought would be british racing green, but its not according to the codes - its Brooklands racing green. When I was looking at rattle cans, this shade came very close, but its actually rover british racing green. Might get it colour matched, but not convinced I want to keep the original colour when I get the car done.

Pete,
I think Steve was referring to his own Top Gear S, he had trouble trying to get a colour match last year.

If it ever stops raining today I will add a few photos later. Thanks for the praise Glen, I was very pleased with the results but, me being picky I reckon another once over with T-cut and polish again .

Colours! Pain isnt it. Like Deeman mine is BRG, but Brooklands Racing Green. In practice that wasn't a perfect match and careful checking showed some variation from slight fading. My local paint specialist was however able to do a closer colour match, which to our surprise turned out to be marginally darker than BRG. (code for info was 420-5038).

He then made up a couple of fan spray nozzle aerosols which, as has been pointed out above, are dramatically better than the old cans. I cannot remember the cost but I remember being very pleasantly surprised. By coincidence I have recently sprayed a pair of MX5 mirrors ready to fit.

Exactly the same as mine - Reckon I might resort to a firm in Portsmouth who appear to colour match off sample pieces.

In that case I will double check for you what mix was used. The can I have in my hand says the paint was Palinol, code 407-0604PC. I will get back to you.

Here we go, results of a 32 rattle can spray job, 24 Epsom Green Pealescent Mettallic and 8 Clear Lacquer

Just before the daylight dissappeared, apologies for rotation of photos, for some reason ipads do this trick.
One thing to watch for when painting horizontal panels, bonnet/boot etc, the little collar on the spraycan collects paint and can potentially drop a drip on the paint surface, I wrapped a narrow strip of masking tape around the can and wiped after every couple of passes. Also with using more than one batch of coloured cans I kept a little of the adjoining panel colour to blend the edges of the panels ensuring colour match. In a confined area as well required planning which panels to paint in which order, then either move the car over or turn round to continue. I noticed that the TVR badges were looking rough so as we have a plating shop at work I got them Gold plated, as this weathers better than nickel or silver.. Blinggggggg !

Agree Mike - looks very good. I'm very pleased with the finish I'm getting - took 4 coats of pearlescent and two lacquer tops. The only issue I seemed to have spraying the pearlescent was a kind of metallic greying (matting)in certain curves when the rest dried shiny (very weird) - hence the four coats to get it right. Any tips on what the cause would be?

Without actually seeing the effect it is difficult to be sure but possibilities are:

A little too dry ( not enough paint to "flow out" Not enough overlap on the passes.
A little too wet and the metallic "shards" floating in the paint have all settled at the same angle in the paint giving a flat/ less shiny effect.
Or maybe the contents have settled a little in the can and the metallic "shards" have all collected in one spot, giving the effect of less colour/shine.
It could just be the "pearlescent effect" catching the light, looking lighter, but that is the beauty of this type of paint different colours with every angle and curve.

Sorry I cannot be more specific, but glad you got there in the end. It is very satisfying to achieve it yourself.

Just an excuse but here is my previous respray job, a couple of years ago. Again with rattle cans ( Halfords Gloss Black ) only 20 cans for the whole car. ( much smaller panels )

MMMmmmm... I regret letting that go. Folk kept telling me it was lovely and was worth a lot more than I valued it, I only bought it to tinker with it was a rubber bumper 1978 model, so not so desireable, I converted it and resprayed it over a 4 year period, keeping it on the road as much as possible.
Finally I put it on a website for silly money. Some chap from France phoned up and bought it there and then, booked its return ferry, came, handed over cash and fetched it that week. I only wanted to see how much interest there would be .... asked far too much for it then couldn't refuse the offer, well it would be rude to not take the cash wouldn't it??
Boy was that car a hoot, big bore exhaust, lowered suspension, the handling and the pop banging on decelleration...... frown wasn't fast but it felt quick !
Oh well.
