Taken the heater out as it only works on fast speed and wire off this green thing would that do it,what is it and can I buy one still

That's the problem it is just a high wattage resistor if there is still a bit of terminal left you may be able to read how many ohms it is with a multimeter, someone may be able to let you have a resistor if they have had a faulty motor.
Most car blower heaters work this way and some are accessible under the bonnet if you have to resort to touring scrapyards.

It looks to me like a resistor, which would indeed give the slower speed.
Does it have any rating values ( ohms ) printed on it ?

The wire wound resister is prone to failure and is probably easy to replace if you can find the value. Another option is to fit a pulse width modulater speed control, this would give you fully variable fan speed control. A decent quality one is about £12 on eBay. Was going to fit one myself but not got round to it yet.

The speed control has a twiddly knob to adjust the speed, could either be set to a desired speed or placed somewhere you can get at it. With a bit more work you could wire in a seperate potentiometer in the dash.

If you can let me know the resistance I'll see if I can find you one on Monday. Alternatively, if someone can measure what voltage is getting to the fan at normal and slow speeds we can work out the resistance from there.
