Okay, this one's a long shot, but I'll try anyway as it's bugging the hell out of me...
There's a song from the 80s or 90s which sounds like something Simple Minds would have produced. Starts with a gentle guitar passage and then kicks into a loud, anthemic hook based on the same notes. It's been used a lot on action footage on TV - trailers for upcoming sports seasons, etc. - that kind of thing. It's a totally recognisable hook and very famous.
Someone had it as their ringtone at work yesterday. Despite the wide range of ages at work everyone recoginsed it and practically the whole office started headbanging when the main hook kicked-in. I'm kicking myself that I don't actually know who it's by because it's such a famous song and, now I'm trying to recall it to the OH, my hapless vocal samples simply aren't cutting it!
