Amps aside, any instrument owners on here?
Took a punt on an '82 White Shadow bass, just waiting on it to arrive. Will post pics when the time comes. I'm by no means a bassist, I'm a (bad) guitarist but I like to mess about on bass from time to time.
Paintwork is battle scarred but the rest seems good. Can get the body repainted and the dings fixed and leave it looking like new but is it better to keep the original patina or have a nice shiny instrument? Would be interested in hearing some opinions. Personally, I love old battered guitars but part of me says this thing has survived 31 years and it deserves some love.

I have a Vox Clubman II bass I bought dismantled along with a lot of other gear, I refinished the body Dodge Challenger Orange as it was quite shabby, for my son to learn on. This was a while ago and I now wish I had left it original.
I am still looking for a set of control knobs and a tuner to complete it but everything else is present and correct including the easily lost bridge cover. The tone is remarkably good for an old, cheaply constructed, short-scale bass, the best feature is it's light weight, half that of my Fender Jazz. If it weren't for the crappy tuners I would gig with it as it looks retro, sounds ace and won't make my shoulder ache.

The frets were uneven and badly finished, it was hard to set the intonation properly. The neck felt very chunky.I seem to remember it sounded good though.
I was only 15 or 16 when I had it, I was given it. My other guitar was an ibanez blazer which had been worked on by overwater and played really well so it might have set my expectations a bit high. I traded the vox for an aria pro 2 rs wild cat which was many times better (I've still got that, and the Ibanez).
I'm sure that if I had invested in a proper set up then it would have been a lot better, I could never justify it though as I alway felt it was not worth investing in.
I like vox amps though

Anyway, here's a pic as promised. Sorry for the crappy quality, iPhone with no flash and poor lighting in my living room. Will be doing a complete resto on it in the near future and will take plenty of decent pics.
Yes, I know it's dirty and covered in fingerprints but that's because I haven't put it down since I got it lol. First time playing bass in maybe 5 years and the first thing I noticed was how much my playing style has changed. Even been asking myself if I want to give up guitar and play bass instead.
There's a few dings here and there on the body, easily remidied with a bit of ispopon and some fresh paint. The tone/volume knobs are of a really wierd, tall, skinny design, almost like they were ripped off an amp and stuck onto the instrument as a bodge. I don't like them at all so will be swapping for a set that look like the originals which I found in my magic box of broken guitar bits. Like this,
The neck is amazing, perfect profile and smooth as a babys ass (Is a babys ass really smooth? I don't know, I never seen one. What a f
ked up expression!), my hand glides up and down with ease.Action is as fast as you want it to be. The previous owner obviously knew what he was at when setting up. All I had to do was take it out of the box and tune and play. And when I played? Oh my God! The sound it made was something else. I messed about for a few hours until I found my own sound but the amount of tones this instrument can produce will explode your mind!
Then I plugged it into an old Zoom FX processor I had lying around. There is now spaghetti on my back wall.
So, I have a bass 'noob' question. My bass has one pickup (the kind that is spilt in 2, part covers E and A, the other covers D and G) but has a 2 way switch. Both positions make a completely different sound so my question is, what exactly does this swith do?
