Is automotive engineering a good field for employment? I'm hoping to study automotive engineering next year and should be done in 5 years but I was just wondering, is it a hard field to get a job in? I've only thought about what I really want to work with, not about how I'll be able to get a job. Also, and I know this is very shallow, but I hope to be able to make a good amount of money once I gain experience and was wondering what would be considered high pay in this field?

At the moment, yes! Lots of jobs around and lots of companies doing well. In the future, who knows.

The money isn't great considering the work that goes into getting the qualifications, but it could be considered pretty good when you are genuinely enjoying your job and getting to play with cars some of the time!

Have a look on the JLR careers website for an idea of pay but expect something like:

Graduate - £25-£30k
Engineer with a couple of years experience - £35-£40k
Senior engineer - £40-£50k
Principal / manager £50k and so on...

For contracting you can probably shift the pay up a band or 2 for the same role.

Thank you very much Ron and Blank for the replies. It's about on par with "normal" mechanical engineering then, and it's not bad considering that I get paid for something I have a huge interest in.

Can I go into other fields of mechanical engineering with an Automotive engineering degree?

If it helps, I graduated from a motorsports technology degree this year - with additional experience as a mechanic. My first job out of uni is contracting for a large automotive manufacturer, taking home as much in a week as I used to in a month. A massive amount of alternative positions available too right now.

I wholeheartedly recommend getting into engineering.

And never get confused between being a technician (fixing and assembling things) and actual engineering (applying deeper thought to the process to do things without instructions)

Nahhhh, I like playing with cars- to be honest id do this for minimum wage but I'd have a hard time realistically spending my income now if I wanted to, as a 20 something with no commitments. Oil and gas has never been a passion, although I wouldn't mind trying it for a few years down the line.

So I'd be able to go on to do Oil and Gas with my automotive engineering degree?

I started as a car mechanic, then a Aircraft Technician then to oil and gas my military background was prob the key. but there is a skill shortage in the North sea if there was a time to swop now would be it.

Mate of Mine (Welsh Matty) did Motorsport and is now doing a PHD at Swansea sponsored by Rolls Royce PLC looking at aerospace crack prediction.

Anyway. I digress. Assuming the OP ends up in automotive, gets some experience, and then decides to go ltd company contracting, he can look forward to a weekly email like this (by the way if anyone wants to apply let me know and we can split the referral fee 50:50) :

There's one in Oxford at MINI that I 'quoted a rate' for and had an interview for. Will find out tomorrow.

Theres absolutely no shame in being a technician, none at all. Yet so many are told they're engineers. It just confuses peoples perception of what an engineer is/does.

I think its part of the reason theres a shortage of engineers, the youth think its all technician work.

Thanks for all the help, I've just sent off my Uni application for Automotive Engineering!

Is it actually possible to get automotive engineering work experience. Admittedly I have been very ambitious by approaching McLaren and Gordon Murray Design, but does anyone know any Automakers who offer work experience, even if it's only for a day?

Good career..generally great people to work with, that's important. Great job prospects too...you'll probably never be rich though...but you can get paid to have experiences that would be difficult to buy...

My advice..get some Chinese or German language skills going too. You don't have to, but it won't do any harm.

Good if you pick the right course at the right uni try and get a sandwich course placement and if you pick a "sponsered" project otherwise there are plenty of engineering graduates doing dull stuff for poor money.

Automotive engineering is a big broad brush ranging from design through to test and warranty work. What area do you want to work in?
Reason I ask is that in some areas you might get a small amount of work experience (if you're really lucky) but in design and test I'd say it's almost impossible because of the confidential nature of the work, and tbh 1 day won't teach you anything apart from how much engineers like to bh like old women. hehe

I'd definitely take up the option of doing the placement year between year 2 and 3 if you get offered it though. It's good for learning a lot about how the industry works.

Me and a few others have taken the placement student to plants and suppliers for visits along with trips to proving grounds and on road evaluation to try and give him a taste of as much as possible.

The Engineer put it far more succinctly than me!
