Recommend me an electric guitar and amp please

I've been playing accoustic for a while now. I've dabbled before with electric and had a transistor amp, but I could never get the sound I wanted from it.

For my sins I'd like to create the early oasis sound such as in this video (from 35 seconds onwards) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1m45312kys

I've been told to do this I'll need a tube amp. So far I've been recommended a Laney VC15 or a Vox AC4. I'll be buying second hand.

Has anyone got anymore recommendations for me regarding the amp?

I'll also be looking at a second hand electric guitar, on that front I haven't a clue so any advice would be welcomed. I was budgeting £200 for an amp and £300 for a guitar.

Lorraine has an Epiphone Les Paul and a Vox VT20+ Valvetronix, IIRC the lp was about £300 and the amp about £120. Lots of presents on the amp, and quite a number of knobs to twiddle if you don't like the presets.

In the end, (as the guy in the shop said) get the guitar you want to play (she tried a few guitars, some quite expensive, that she didn't like at all). The amp is plenty loud enough to be heard outside with all the doors and windows shut if you want to, and has a headphones socket for quiet self amusement (fnarr).

You#ll have a queue of people recommending gear but the best answer is to take yourself down the LGS & try a few combinations until you find what YOU like.

But for info, for the Oasis sound, you want a guitar with humbucker pickups as your starting point. Noel played Epiphone Casinos a lot & I think that's what's in that video, although one in the shop for £300 isn't going to be the same as the Oasis match fit stage gear by some distance.

I think you might struggle to get that sound no matter what you spend unless you have a field and no neighbours. What amp have you got now? Unless it's a real stinker I'd be inclined to spend all the money on a better guitar unless you find something for £300 that you really love.

Laney Cub 12R is all the amp you could need up to the point of playing club gigs. Mine (albeit with an upgrade speaker fitted) is fine for jam sessions and a pub gig at around half volume, and it has a built-in attenuator to reduce the output for home practising. Slightly over budget at £259, but at sensible volume levels it sounds better than my Marshall DSL100.

It does clean sounds quite well, it does crunchy sounds very well, and is all tube so responds properly to input levels. Only one channel though, so for different levels of gain in one track you'll need a boost pedal to go with it.
