SLX or Deore Disc brakes

Chain reaction cycles have a good offer on at the moment and the credit cards getting a bit of a battering! I can either get Deore disc brakes or for slightly more SLX disc brakes.

Both sets come with RT66 discs (I assume they are ok with both types of brakes?):

I know its only £30 but that money could go towards upgrading something else so is it really worth the extra to get the SLX brakes?

Also with the Deore brakes I have the option of buying them with or without olives(?),Iassume its better to buy them with olives?

The olives are supplied if you need to shorten the hydraulic hoses.

Seems like slx are supplied in two lengths negating the need to shorten..

Deore brakes are very good, and more than enough for most people, but SLX brakes are that bit more powerful, feel a little better, and look better in my opinion.

The way I justify the extra cost to myself: if I get the better option, I'm less likely to think 'I wish I'd have got the cheaper option' than 'should have spent a little more' if that makes sense

A mate has the Deores and thinks they re fantastic. He is 15 stone and moves with speed with confidence they will stop him, which they do easily.

I've recently bought some Deore brakes, the most recent ones (it's hard to tell looking at them). I was in a pinch and just wanted a cheap brake - had the LBS bang them on and headed down to Morzine.

As far as I can tell SLX and Deore are identical aside from:

The lever point adjust is 'tool free' on the SLX and you need a small hex key on the Deore.

The SLX come with the cool wave pads - little heat sinks on the pads to help cooling, the Deore pads don't BUT the callipers are identical - it's just which pads they come with, I might try some cool wave pads next summer, but when I'm splashing through puddles and it's 3c out I feel I can live without them.

The brakes themselves are really impressive, even forgetting the price - there's a quarter pull of 'first trigger' I would personally tune-out if I could find the time, but there's more than enough power and they're smooth and linier - dare I say nicer to use then Formula and Hope brakes I've had before that cost 3-4 times as much.

I'm a terrible snob though, so I'd probably get the SLX given the choice, at the time it was £40 and end for Deore or £100 for the SLX so I saved my pocket money for Mutzig.

Plump for a bit more and get the XT or just get the Deore's, can get them quite a bit cheaper from Bike-Discount.de (£79)

[/quote]I have both sets, Deore on my fatty and SLX on my 29er, identical brakes apart from the allen key adjust.

Brilliant and far better than a lot more expensive brakes out there. (on par with my XO trails on my enduro bike)

I had the same dilema earlier in the year... Deore vs SLX vs XT

I decided that they are functionally identical. The only differences are the lever adjuster knobs and the heatsink pads. Look at them side by side and ride them and you will see what I mean!

I went with deore as I would only get the benefit of the heatsink pads on alpine descents...I don't do many of those!
