997.1 Turbo rubber smell

Hi Chaps, I am looking for some advice, each time a use my car there is a smell of burning rubber around the rear of the car. No I haven't been dough nutting or drifting burning the rear tyres. If I stick my head into the engine bay the smell is stronger. Have checked the ancillary belt and it seems to be correctly tensioned and in good condition, coolant is at the correct level and the engine is not overheating car running well. So I am puzzled where the smell is originating and if its normal or something that needs attention the car has done 11k miles?

You sure it is rubber not brake or clutch smell?

Rubber would be odd unless it's just new-car smell.

Its pretty normal. Could be smell from cats, or hot rear tyres, and or clutch. Mine sometimes smells like that but only after a hard drive

I've had that on my Cayman from new, for the past 7 years.

I have a theory that the microscopic bits of rubber that are worn away from the rear wheels flick up onto the exhaust and melt away, producing the smell.

It's either that or, bearing in mind turbo drivers are sexually more active than anyone else, and it's your disused condoms that you casually discard from the window, landing on your exhaust.

I expect someone will be along shortly, to advise.

ilduce I think that you may be onto something or on something I get a similar smell off my motor bike its a KTM RC8 and the exhaust is under the engine and is mounted between both wheels, and it has no drive belts. Now about sex in a 911 T now that must be hard work unless you are vertically challenged or have a 3ft tool. Even on the bonnet would be a problem as its ali and would fold.

I used to have a 996 Turbo and often noticed the same smell. In 6 years of ownership it didn't give rise to any problems.

Got the same smell on my 997.2.

My 997.1 turbo also gives off the rubber smell.

I had a similar smell on my C4S and it reduced significantly after the geo was done.

So I guess it was because the tyres previously were out of alignment and hence heating up too much / throwing up small pieces of rubber onto the exhaust etc.

A combination of the tyres scrubbing and heating up more as a result, thus depositing more rubber onto the exhaust .
