I really hope this impression of the rules is highly overdone. It literally looks like f1 is giving the finger....

IIRC the rules about the dropped nose is to do with safety so that the end is less at another drivers height.
They should work on the rules so something more like this nose is the logical solution...
I was a teenager during this period of F1 and a massive Nige fan - have to say looking back at the pictures they really were pretty cars, especially compared to now. Over the years -They should work on the rules so something more like this nose is the logical solution...
The 89/90 Ferrari
The 91/92 Williams
The 91 Jordan
The 89 Onyx car
Even some of the Minardi's / Dallara's / Lola (Lamborghini) / Ossella's
Were great looking. Hopefully some form over function changes soon.

Unfortunately I don't think we will ever see cars with noses like this again due to the cars of that era Being prone to submarining under another car in a rear impact ther are some pretty stringent rules around the nose cone to stop any designs like this again They should work on the rules so something more like this nose is the logical solution...
They'd just have to say that any part of the surface of the nose cone in front of the front suspension must be a convex shape with no perforations in it. Maybe also that the mounts for the front wing must be attached to the nose on part of the surface within 10 degrees of horizontal.

But design is normally more about how something works than how it looks, especially in this case.
Agreed. I suppose it is a bit of a demonstration of how 'wrong' f1 is these days. Regulations are changed so often/ill considered before implemented/heavily restrictive that designers are forced to design something ugly to be competitive.Perhaps the FIA should be a little more relaxed on rules in some areas to allow some freedom of design. I also think that the teams and designers should moan a little less and if they really are worried about their 'ugly' cars, they should do something about it. Propose alternatives to the FIA, that sort of thing, they cannot just stand their and point the finger at someone else.
Surely noone will use the Monkey nose in the article linked by the OP? You'd just loose the two vertical wing supports and replace them with a central "post" that meets the nose width regulation and use it to carry the wing too.
Perhaps the FIA need to add a Style clause, you can't race unless Mrs Beckham* says it looks good? :-)

There's a big thread on f1technical about the noses http://www.f1technical.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1... , this monkey nose thing looks like it's legal, and a few teams could use it. There's some hope that they could be some with noses similar to the 2007 cars like the MP4/21, but the wing wouldn't be dipped in the middle, they don't think the 2009 Brawn nose would be legal.
Tyrrell and Footwork used to run single pillar noses

Also talk there that the Williams 'walrus nose' could make a comeback.
