yeh, I would, but I'm not spending £500 on 2 new tyres now. I only bought these in August. The car's spent most of September & October in Hartech after a rebuild. Feckin things are virtually new!!

Bizarre really (and VERY lucky imho).
I'd been driving to work (I live in rural Herefordshire, so each day is a rather pleasant commute).

Anyhoo, got into Hereford and was stopping at a crossroads. As I crossed it, "POP!! fap fap fap fap" then silence. I thought to myself, "that's strange!" drove slowly to a traffic light - I was turning left.....and the back end nearly overtook the front!

Thankfully, rim is ok. As am I. Although, I do need some new undercrackers!!

5 mins earlier, I was "making progress" Very lucky indeed.

Definitely a good question!

As to a replacement, if near new you should be able to get away with buying just one new replacement.

If you want cheaper go for Ebay but make sure that the tread depth is similar.

So what really happened was that the tyre was underinflated (puncture) you did not notice, and it obviously shredded.

well, if it was punctured, it must have been some debris, and a pretty quick deflation. I didn't notice a thing.

Confused - what does that mean?

well, in my mind, the 4wd system reigned any of the "minor" changes in, so I wouldn't notice. It was only when the tyre borked properly, the system gave up.

What you seem to have there are the signs of a tyre that has been driven on for quite a bit in at least a partially deflated state. This naturally destroys the sidewall.

I don't blame you for not noticing. With all the traction-gizmos etc and the fact that sidewalls are so low anyway, i.e. the rims are so large, the car would have driven reasonably normally and you would have to have had your attention pre-drawn to the issue to notice anything untoward.

Had there been full pressure in the tyre, it would not have been a pop that you heard, but a hell of a bang.

Disturbing that I never felt a thing prior though. I was totally unaware, and I do check my tyres (visually anyway).

I buy my tyres at John's Tyres (next to Fire Station)on Ledbury Road, Hereford. They are quick and efficient and the weights end up in groups. They will also match on-line prices.

The Hereford roads are bad from a pot hole perspective. It's very noticeable how bad when travelling westwards into Wales and the improvement when crossing the border.
