Has anyone used one of these things? Do they really work?

Not got a big budget (under £100) but wouldn't mind a go in the sea next time I'm out.

Any recommendations?

I'd say it depends what you meann by work. If you mean does it find fish, then it'll certainly pick up air pockets and debris in the water. If you just want accurate depth readings and an idea of the density of the bottom (ie whether it's sand or rock) then they do work. As far as recommendations then get anything around your budget. It'll probably be a basic Eagle or similar and black and white with only a few functions, but most of the options on the more expensive units are novelties and ultimately they usually just produce meaningless blibs and blobs. But a sonar, to give it it's real title. Is useful for finding the reefs and gullies where the fish are likely to be.
