took the Chim out for a run yesterday and can hear a ticking..at front of the passenger side rocker cover
not exhaust manifold...
a quite metallic click..
took off the oil filler cap and rested screwdriver on end of valve gear and bingo that is where it is
coming from....
is this something to be immediately worried about? ie: has something come loose from the rocker and is potentially floating around the engine
or is it....worn cam? Car has done 57,000 miles
not short of power as far as I can tell

Mine had a slight rattle, so decided to change the cam and the rockers. It's like a different car.
DIY or a garage jobbie?perhaps I could buy this tuning book - it is only £878.52p

eeach....time to get the cover off and have a look...
maybe I can get my inspection camera in there...
thanks guys
Be nigh on impossible with a camera. Take rocker covers off as it will take less time and have a look. If it is that you've lost a pad it may be in the sump [easy job] or in the valley [bit more complicated as you need to remove inlet maifold] but you will need to find it. As for replacements, don't scrimp as some after market rockers I've seen are appalling! Some advice on here about cheap parts can be a path to disaster. maybe I can get my inspection camera in there...
thanks guys
so if the pad is missing and I do find it...
then is it a case of changing all the rockers just to be safe....both sides too ?
sounds like then I will need to check the pre-load so I may as well do the cam as well and all the ancillary stuff like chain etc
if I take covers off and the pads are all there and look ok can I assume it is a dodgy tappet? and is ok to drive for now???

what Phazed said get it checked out it may only be a lazy hydraulic tappet not pumping up ...............but it could also be
