Trying to work out how much being on call is worth to me
Discussion
I do on call for work and recently they dropped the amount that they pay for being on call. Now as the hassle of being on call increases due to customer demand I'm trying to work out if being on call is actually worth it. Soon my home will be an extention of the office at weekends, that much I've already predicted and lodged a note with my manager about.
Is there a formula or calculator about that I can use to work out how much it is worth to me after tax and NI is deducted? I've worked out so far pre deductions that what they pay for me to carry the phone is equvilent to £1.15 an hour assuming I don't get called. I can claim overtime if I do. In respect to that I know how much I claim as I keep all the OT forms so can add up the amount extra I get per year.

Over the course of a year it averages out at 1 week a month. So £1224 a year, to feel trapped in your own home incase someone calls, woken up at any hour of the night and expected in at 9am regardless.
This weekend made the point for me, and if I'm right with my prediction, it will get a whole load worse. The 1 point I haven't mentioned, the unit I cover on call for, I left almost 2 years ago!

I was on call for £150 per week, 1 in 2 with hourly rate for call out. There was no proper stand down policy if I got called out, I still had to be in for 6am but "could leave a few hours early" I figured risking my neck driving 30 miles in the middle of the night after 2 hours sleep wasn't worth it.
I used to get paid £300 for just a weekend on call and this was quite a few years ago in a small\medium sized firm when I used to be on PAYE.
Not saying that to boast, it was a figure which was decided after consultation with the whole department and that was deemed adequate recompense for being available, lucid (i.e. not pissed) and near to your laptop and or in an emergency, not too far from the office (so no dialling in from a weekend trip away). Yes you could argue that if you didn't get called it was money for free but for 48 hours of effectively being trapped at home for the weekend, I don't think people would have accepted anything less.
