Years ago I had my own home recording studio, fostex 812 desk, tascam 38 etc,

Would like to get back into recording, mostly just guitar and vocals,

What is the best recording kit around now for just simple home recording,

Either a tascam hd based unit or a mac. Depends how much you want to spend, I've just self up with a Samson USB mic running into a MacBook Air, with the free GarageBand software, and it seems to work well enough. Just need to work on the mic positioning.

Yup, Mac and a decent microphone is pretty much all you'll need these days. I've actually had not-terrible results using the mic that's fitted to the MBP.

Alternatively Cockos Reaper for a software recording platform on a PC - actually known as a Digital Audio Workstation.

However, Garageband is so easy and good quality. You´ll just need to add an optional USB microphone if you want to record at a better quality than the built in mic will offer, and perhaps a USB MIDI keyboard to trigger the huge array of Garagebands built in keyboards, pianos, synths, sound effects, drum kits etc.

Beware Gear Lust and prepare for the learning curve again!

I've been using a Yamaha AW4414 workstation new since 2001, never needed to look at anything else, still does the job I want to too, I record guitars, bass, keyboards, vox and Roland drums with a click track to achieve very good results.
