Just having a look through my savings account and noticed I was paid some interest in August. I can't make sense of the amount paid though. Last year, I had £11,000 in the account and was paid just over £100 in interest in Aug 2012. This year, when paid the interest in Aug 2013, I had £32,000 in the account. I was only paid £17. The money was saved gradually over the year. For example, I had £22,000 saved by Jan 2013. To me, it doesn't seem that I have been paid enough interest, or am I missing something?

The interest rate has changed...?

From 1% to 0.1%?

You've been had by an 'introductory bonus rate' no doubt. Bloody nuisance.

Probably a first year rate. I managed to get over £200 interest paid on £10k in one of my accounts a few weeks ago. Now it's defaulted to pretty much nothing so I have to change the account to get another 'good' rate. As Simpo Two says, bloody nuisance.

The Consumer Prices Index measure of inflation was 2.7% during September.

Just to beat inflation a basic rate taxpayer at 20% needs to find a taxable savings account paying 3.38% per annum while a higher rate taxpayer at 40% needs to find one paying at least 4.50%. Joyfully, there are just eight savings accounts that offset JUST the effects of tax and inflation and the average interest paid across the ISA range is a whopping 1.70% (taking into account those 'special' rates) - a year ago it was 2.29%.
