The situation as it stands is that I will be 16 in a week. The problem is that I don't have a job - but it's about bloody time that I did - and I haven't got a clue where to start. My search so far has been limited to looking at the vacancies of large companies' local outlets but so far my endeavour has been fruitless. M&S didn't have anything and neither did McDonald's, Waitrose, Pizza Hut, Halfords, etc., etc. I know you can't be fussy in a situation like this but I point blank refuse to work in Sainsbury's because my mother and sister are employed there.
I know that my efforts so far are perhaps best described as 'minimal' but I don't have much of a clue what to do, and I don't know if I'm asking a bit too soon, but I would greatly appreciate some advice from the PH masses, most of whom have had to experience my current circs.

You have a advantage over others that from your posting on here you appear to be determined to get off your backside and do something about it.
When i left school in 79 with 3 million unemployed i struggled as well and with a bit of a push i literally went from one side of town to the other knocking on every business door just on the off chance they needed a trainee. I also opened the yellow pages on a random page, it was the letter "i" and started making phone calls. I ended doing 20 years in the Insurance business (now moved on), go for it.

Go to your local FE college, they should have apprenticeship vacancies that they can match you too. PM me if you want more info. I often wonder what it would have been like if I had joined the forces and travelled around with them, maybe going for RAF and Navy more. then looking at training up in engineering or IT related positions.
If that is too much then working out what you like doing... If its the thought of fettling with engines, see if the local college has a course that is suitable, this can be done with most hobbies that you want to turn into day job, then see if there are any apprenticeship schemes out there.

Are you talking about part time work or career?
If it's for part time your list should be enough to work through. Supermarkets are probably quite good in that you do learn how to interact with people.
If it's for your career then it's another world. What do you want to do, what do you enjoy doing? some type of building work, car mechanics, manual stuff or maybe you intend on A levels then Uni?
Go and see your careers adviser at school. dont just leave school and settle on a supermarket type work as at your age you could do anything really.
Some friends have done well by sticking it out through retail though...

Why don't you try and do something you're interested in? By your nick I would guess that would be going around garages and car show rooms, try and get some work with them? It would probably involve making lots of tea and passing spanners to start with but would give you some useful skills and be a lot more interesting than stacking shelves or similar.
Sounds like you've got a good attitude, and my bet is that if you went around 10 garages in your area one of them would give you a start.

John Lewis are also always recruiting about now for part timers, beauty is you instantly get discounts for stuff in store, also they are quite flexible with the hours you want to do.
For Example I did 6pm to 8pm Tues to Friday and all day Sunday 10.30am to 4.30pm paid time and a half.

Put together a basic CV. At 16 you wont have much to put on it but your school history and any clubs/societies etc that you may be a member of. Possibly even get some business cards made with your contact details on, only a few quid online.
Then go round in person to car showrooms, shops, wherever. Ask to speak to someone about positions, have a chat, leave you card and CV.
Someone will phone you back. As has been mentioned, coming up to Xmas shops will be taking on additional staff and if they have already met a pleasant, smartly dressed chap who left them his info you will be the 1st person they call.

Thanks everyone. I've got a few showrooms near me so I'll give them a try and maybe the local Kwik Fit (completely forgot we had one of those). I'll have a look at Gumtree and creating a CV as well. Unfortunately I don't have a local John Lewis or Argos, the nearest are a good few miles away so only much good for summer work.

When I was your age i was undecided between joining the RAF or going to uni, I chose the latter but often wonder what my life would have been like...

the low academic achievers can do the foundation colleges and the high achievers can go 6th form bursary or Welbeck depending on level 3 subjects and future commissioned jon area
I started glass collecting in a pub part time whilst I went to college. Eventually went on to the bar at 17 and left when I got my first full time career job at 18.
It's good you want to start working. You'll get paid peanuts but it's cash in the bank (or pocket) and stands you in good stead.
Bar work for me was great. I couldn't have worked in retail or anything like that.

Sorry I've not replied for a few days. I've just discovered that the Guild of Specialist Engineers has started apprenticeship courses in classic and sports car maintenance and that all sounds rather marvellous, but there seems to be very little information about that.
I've also found out that my local library holds sessions for discussing employment matters but they are on Mondays so they clash with school.
With that being the case, I have decided to set Saturday aside for asking about job opportunities in the shops at the bottom of my road.
