Storm force Sunday weather forecast

Given that they're forecasting "severe gale 9 to violent storm 11" on Sunday across the country, how will that affect flights? Will they cancel inbound and outbound flights?

Or will it just be really really bumpy?

I don't think that will be the case this time. The shipping forecast is showing winds increasing to storm force 10, and the inshore waters forecast outlook for the south and east coasts are showing violent storm force 11. The synoptic charts out to 48 hours are showing a very deep low moving right across the centre of England. It is going to be very windy in the south.

Friday afternoon at work had most people scouring the surf sites for which beaches can handle the predicted 25' surf on an ebbing tide and an offshore wind! I suspect all the Inshore Lifeboats up the North coast will be busy this afternoon.

My mate who is at the met office has said severe low level terbulance is forecast too. I guess thats not surprising.

We will still work when possible, but if the wind is outside of aircraft limits for takeoff and landing, its a no go.

If you are a slightly nervous flyer, I'd give it a miss over the next few days.

Good time to sit on the end of a runway and see how they cope (or not).

To be honest, it will really depend on actual weather conditions. Cross winds will probably be limiting at some airports even for the bigger aircraft. Even if the wind is within crosswind limits, there will be plenty of cancelled flights and I suspect lots of delays.

Find a runway pointing into the wind and descend vertically!

Most of the wind in the south of England is from wsw so it's roughly into wind on the predominantly westerly runways at LGW LHR STN etc. I expect it will be bumpy but still workable in most major airports.

LGW for instance has a worst forecast of 230 40G63 between 5-8 AM so with gusts of 63kts on a runway direction on 260 degrees equates to a crosswind of 20 gusting to 32KTS. That's certainly doable in most aircraft. It will be sporty though.

Anything between 190/230 and over 15 kts can be entraining at LGW.
The BA maintenance shed doesn't half cause some lumps and bumps. Admittedly, not half as bad as it used to be, but still gets interesting.

Bedford's wind doesn't appear to get stronger than 25mph in the early hours of Monday morning...and just 46mph gusts.
Nothing abnormal then for an autumn day.
