996 turbo or wait for 2005?
Discussion
Advice from anyone who knows more than I...
I have an order in for a 911 turbo (996) due early 2004. But - as I'm sure you know, the new 911 turbo is set for a 2005 launch. Should I transfer my order to the new car (and wait forever), or stick with the car I've ordered, or put in an order for the new one as well?? ! (to change cars in 2006)
It's a tough life with tough choices

I'm surprised there's still an 18 month wait for turbos.
I'd check with a few other dealers to get delivery times. I ordered mine on 01/08/01 and took delivery in april, 8 months later.
If you can't get a new 996 until 2004, phone your dealer and transfer your deposit to the new version (2005/6?). Then log onto www.porsche.com and go to the UK website to see all the approved used turbos in the OPC network. Immediately leave work and buy one.
Life is to bloody short to wait 3 years.

I'd go for the 996 as it looks like a 911 from the side, with the sloping roofline. The new model looks a tad hunchbacked from the photos released. Sure the new one will be a technical improvement though, but how fast can you go on our roads anyway? Why not keep both orders alive, then sell either the 996 or your list place for a profit?
Hi Roadrunner , photo`s of the new turbo where can i finfd them , gota link please

Yeah I agree. Put your order down on the 2005 model and go and get a second hand one now from a dealership and trade it in against the new model in 2005 . The dealership will give you a good trade in value in my experience if you're buying a car off them again.
I'm not sure I have as much patience as you guys!
GetCarter - an alternative might be to go after a 993TT (Ok I'm biased!) and buy a secondary toy (355 or Tuscan S for e.g?).
993TTs seem to have stabilized in the £50-60k bracket (main dealer right hookers, too) dependant mainly on mileage but whether it's done 20 or 50k miles should make little difference to the ownership experience. Easily tweakable too to low/mid 400s bhp-wise and thus always pretty vivid if you like that kinda thing.
Last night, inspired by the EVO review of the new Tuscan R I went for a small reminder of 993TT magic. All I can say is that if Harry M thinks the Tuscan R's destruction of the 355 in the manner described was a uniquely impressive feat then it shows just how over familiar and blase people can get about the relatively ubiquitous (modern) 911 performance envelope. Exhileration of the finest order!

Getcarter, if my TT order is anything to go by you won't have to wait until 2004. Daz got his after 8 months, and mine should arrive 12 months after I paid my deposit.
Even if you have to wait until 2003 (or buy a good used one) 2006 is a long way off! I agree with everyone else here - order the new version and go for something to fill the 3 year gap.
Have you talked to your dealer about the forecast 2004 delivery? Most of them play safe by telling you there will be a long wait, and this may be to weed out the frivolous enquiries.
Lee, thanks for your encouragement. I had a short drive in one a few months ago, and was mightily impressed!

McNab.
Good to hear someone else has a 996tt on the way. Can't sleep at the moment? It's normal..
Are you going for the X50 power upgrade?
I managed to trick myself into thinking that if I didn't order it I would definitely regret it in six months. Knowing that I'd not ordered the car in the best performance spec possible, I wouldn't be able to sleep at night. I'd also be looking at other people's turbos and wondering if theirs was a "proper" one!!!

PS if you are tall and intend doing trackdays, make sure you can fit in the car with a crash helmet. If you can't consider the lowered seat option and ordering without a sunroof (sunroof is standard in UK spec). I didn't realise this and so can't do track days.

Thanks for the help and advice guys.
My accountant would resign if I bought another car at the moment (I've got an R500 arriving in two weeks). But seeing how quickly you guys have got (are getting) the 996 TT - I'll bend my dealers ear on Monday and see if he really means 2004, or if he's just covering his back.
BTW, I'm going for the X50 upgrade - just don't tell my accountant.
Thanks again
Steve
