Due to an washing machine 'incident' my nice 3/4 roubaix lined tights are ruined so I'm looking for a replacement.

Interested to hear thoughts on the pros & cons of using knee/leg warmers of a standard pair of tights.

Currently eyeing up the Castelli nanoflex range smile

IMO you can go straight from (decent length) roubaix knee warmers to tights. Leg warmers aren't really necessary as they only cover the small gap between knee warmers and your socks.

Also tights over shorts keep your tackle nice and warm!

Tights for me, don't hinder movement like knee warmers do, don't look gay like 3/4 do, and if you chose between roubaix lined, and normal then you should not get too warm, plus they keep the muck off your legs smile

For cheapo ones, the DHB Aereon ones are decent, I've used a pair for a year and for most days over winter, still OK, though seams a little worn now, but for £40, bargain. I've ridden in -4 without issue.

I have all of the above, and use them all at different times. You can never have too much kit.

I like looking gay in my 3/4s! wink

mince mince mince

My legs are pretty good at keeping warm, my thin roubaixs served me well last year and there was no chafing or bunching which going to knee warmers looks like it would do.

I currently use knee warmers. While they work pretty well they do have a habit of bunching plus my shorts arnt lined so I feel the cold at the top of my legs.

Time to spend some money I guess. Has anyone tried the Muddy Fox ones from sports world? I know they look a bit crap but for 20 quid it might be worth a punt.

No experience of Muddy Fox branded stuff, but in general Sports Direct sells brands that it owns, hence the low prices. You can pretty much ignore any claims of an RRP as they pretty much only appear at those higher prices to conform to the trading standards regulations.

I bought a bunch of Karrimor branded cycle jerseys from them, and they were OK VFM. Nothing special, but they did the job although the fit was very loose. As for the Karrimor shorts, they were absolutely terrible, biggest waste of money ever. In all honesty I can't see how they will be made anywhere different to the Muddy Fox branded stuff. Sports direct own brands/trading names, not factories, and I imagine all their gear comes from the same/very similar sources.

I had better luck with cycling leg wear from Aldi/Lidl, but the Sports Direct tops seemed better than the Aldi/Lidl tops. I hope that helps, but knowing what I do now, I wouldn't buy any more cycling gear from SD, instead I'd buy something at the lower end of the market from a more recognised 'cycling' brand. But like you say, quite possibly worth a punt at £20. So long as they don't irritate you or rub you raw, then £20 would seem pretty good value for a season's worth of wear - if they last any longer it'd be a bonus.

I'd always buy a non padded bib tight, worn over decent padded shorts smile (with cheap padded gear it's usually the pad that is the noticeably cheap bit)

The bournesports £20 ones on ebay look identical to the £25 planet-x ones, but I don't think I'd like having a zip. I have an old pair of unbranded cycling club bib tights, which are great but won't last forever, so also in the market for something without a pad or zip and half decent under £50 please.

I wore leg warmers last week with my bib shorts for my commute so I can cycle in the cooler morning with the leg warmers and when it was warmer (ha!) on the way back I didn't need them - saves having two pairs with me.

If I'm going out myself at weekends or the like, I wear the full leg ones I have.

I'll only wear knee warmers if there is a very good chance I'll be removing them later on in the ride based on the weather forecast.

My warmers are comfortable to ride long distance but nowhere near as good as tights for keeping you warm or clean.

Both myslef and my son have just bought some Assos leg warmers from the Assos Outlet Store for £17.05 per pair. We both don't like really wearing bib tights so these are great with bib shorts. My son wore them last week on a ride and he said they were so comfortable he forgot he was wearing them. Assos quality at a give away price.

+1 on the sports direct stuff. The cut of the MFX stuff is quite strange - i couldnt fit my ass into their large (Lycra!) shorts, but I'm a medium elsewhere, hmmm.

Recently bought some of their cheapy base layers that I plan to use running and cycling, seem alright so far!

afaik leg warmers are not used with knee warmers and are used under the shorts. Leg warmers are good in current temps but once it gets colder (constant under 10deg) the I use tights over shorts. I find them more comfortable than leg warmers which I find can chafe at the top of the thigh irked

I'm a big fan of leg warmers and bib shorts combo. They are much thinner than my Altra night vision bib tights. The advantage of the leg warmer bib short is because they are thinner, they can dry out much quicker, so you can get soaked in the morning andyou should be able to ride home with dry kit.

I found my leg warmers uncomfortable when I first used them, but I think they loosened up a bit and I don't really notice I have them on now. Mine are the DHB ones. Only £15 for the pair and they are bright blue too smile
