Only have to look at values for UR quattros to see that if anyone else had produced the 944T it would be a desireable classic by now worth far more than what they are going for.
Would it have been further developed though? The 944T is of course the original Porsche cup car the question that if a.n.other car company was in that position in the mid 80's would they have developed it further over several seasons of racing? I doubt it as there isn't much of a precedent there, its a car that didn't fit in particularly well to any of the big race series/championships so would and could only have been developed for a single make championship.

VW doesnt have much of a history of persevering with and developing cars. They stuck with the Beetle but did little to it and they were keen to leave that in their past.
Id have been surprised if they had developed the 931, as this came about due to the criticism levelled at Porsche over the lacklustre performance. Had it been a VW then 125bhp when everyone else had cast cranks and <100bhp would have been more than enough.
The 944 engine and series two dashboard and instruments would never have come about without Porsches ownership, so It could have remained with the early (<1978) rear suspension and an AUDI tranaxle: possibly a 5spd, but that might well have been it.

I sometimes wonder if the 944T would have developed further if VW had taken the original 924 design. With continued Porsche input and VW money it could have been an 80's supercar rather than being kept in the 911's shadow.
If VW had released the car instead of selling it back to porsche to become the 924, then there would never have been a 944, let alone a turbo.It would have lasted maybe 5 years tops. I cant even say that they would have made the 924 turbo either!
