How to get a good Pay rise from a big successful company?
Discussion
A few of us work for a large UK business that is doing very well at the moment.
We have started negotiations for a pay rise. I just wondered if anyone has any help, ideas or good stories on how to get a decent pay rise.
When the bosses ask for a reason why , shrugging shoulders and saying cause we won't one won't cut the mustard....
Obviously we have to sell ourselves which I suppose is not a very British thing to do.

We've done all sorts of savings, worked harder than ever so yeah we do..
Can you quantify your contribution to the savings and any numbers regarding productivity increase? When you say 'We've done all sorts of savings' does that mean you have suggested and carried out the savings on your own initiative, or management has made savings and you don't understand how operating a business works? ...not saying this is the case
Its a strange one, but I work for a reasonable sized company and have done well with pay rises and promotions. I have never needed to ask though.....
I do publicise any successes inreal money terms, but I also offer what I will deliver in the future. The future vision is then achieved and so it goes on.
I always thought in 'large' organisations the pay deal was based on achieving personal objectives set during your development review? We are moving that way, but not yet.
I have a small team who work for me, and I actively resist an employee who is continuinely moaning about their wages or requesting promotion. Actions speak louder than words.... And I reward based on action rather than words.
Not sure if that helps? I suspect it depends on your bosses and the organisations attitude to pay and reward.

Thanks so much , all contributions are helpful.
Savings we made were in consultation together with our management looking forward during difficult times. Was a very difficult pill to swallow at times but we felt the right thing to do. During the difficulties the guys we work for keep posting record profits.. Are we mugs for helping them.?... It felt it Was in all of our best interests at the time. Propaganda ,yes. Recession yes, recession proof product... Almost..
So here we are a few years on doing well, helping and contributing massively (difficult to quantify though) and would like a pay rise above inflation. Not too much to ask?
Any stories anecdotes ?

No short term solution. You need to get pally with the person that authorizes pay rises and then do a great job for him / her so that they feel a raise is due. Imho doing a good job = no raise whilst doing a fantastic job gets one. In my old job most seemed to think that merely the passage of time = pay raise, crazy b

In 1973, when I was a teenager, I worked as a van driver for an electrical wholesaler in Stockport. My wages were £17pw, which was about the going rate at the time.Savings we made were in consultation together with our management looking forward during difficult times. My boss, (who I got on very well with) had just bought a brand new Jensen Interceptor Mk 3 and lived in a swish house in Prestbury, and spent most of his days in The Millionaire club in Manchester.
I plucked up the courage...
knocked on his door and walked in....(half an hour before his blinds were down because he said he was having "French lessons" with his French au pair....
...)Anyhow, I nervously muttered I wanted a pay rise to £19pw and he said, and I quote......"That's all very well Wacky, but how am I going to be able to afford to put petrol in my new Jensen?"
He said he would have a think about it, but under NO CIRCUMSTANCES was I to tell any of the other 24 members of staff I had asked for a rise.
The next week there was £21 in my pay packet......

He who dares wins.....
One of the reasons I left old company was cos they pulled the plug on bonuses in 2008 when the recession hit yet still expected us to bust our nuts for them! Sorry but you'll only get a good day outta me with a no bonus culture and when you bring them back then I'll start with the late nights

Let them know you're going for interviews, if they value you, they will take action.
I got asked into my managers office last month and got 25%.
Take this good advice one stage further....it really depends on how "resourceful" you want to be........I got asked into my managers office last month and got 25%.

I received significant salary rises over the years (several decades ago I admit), pre internet, working for various Companies by providing a letter detailing an "offer" of employment with a salary substantially above the one I was currently on at the time. By sheer coincidence, this letter and slight variants of same would remarkably appear shortly before salary review time and had the desired effect each time without exception.
To anyone attempting to do same these days I would strongly advise that you are 100percent sure that your employers view you as being totally indespensible, otherwise it may just backfire.....
