As usual I am getting itchy feet and thinking of changing cars. I have enjoyed the porsche (993 model) but it is nearly 10 years old and is becoming dated. The used market seems strong at the moment so I am sure I would get a good price. Have any of you guys had experience with both the 993 and M3?

Haven't had both but I've got an M3 and will going down the 993 route at some point in the future.
The M3 will feel so much more modern than the 993, especially inside. As you've had an M5 before you'll be familiar with the performance (M3 is similar to the M5 in terms of performance but more chuckable).

I went in the opposite direction to you. I sold my e46 M3 for a 993 C2 after owning it for just 3 weeks. Coming from an e30 M3 I found the e46 too refined (possibly even remote?) but have to admit it's a fantastically finished/appointed car if it's spec'd with H/K, sat nav and full leccy seats.
The 993 is more my kind of car; less gizmos and no silly 'sport' button. I guess I prefer the rawer thrills.
One thing to consider is that with the e90 due for release next year, values of e46s (especially the M3's) will tumble due to the number sold. The e46 I bought had cost the original owner over £1k a month in depreciation alone!

Fair point - but the E90 M3 will not be out until late 2006/early 2007. Also BMW are going to start running down the production of the E46 M3 so residuals should be pretty good after the first years hit (which admitedly is evil - bought mine at 16 months old and it had lost £12k of it's original price)
I was really struggling between 911 and M3. Agree that the 911 is a more truer form of drivers car, but after testing both 993, 996 and M3 I didn't find the M3 to be siginficantly lacking (probably 85% of the feedback of a 911) but a LOT more practical, which coming from a Lotus was very nice.
Then a nice M3 CSL will do both jobs VERY well and you can pick them up for around £40K now - food for thought

Definitely as quick as far as I can tell, kind of miss the aircooled thrum but it has a loud and unique voice of its own. The M3 will definitely keep me happy for a while and I would say now is a good time to get out of the 993 as residuals for a 10 year old car are still very high. Good luck with the quandry

Patrick, I moved from 993 C2 to 996 C2 and found the 996 to be more efficient but less involving. Then I changed the 996 and shorlty afterwards bought a E46 M3. I found the M3 somewhere in between the 993 and 996 since it recaptured some of the mechanical connection I missed from the 993 but was as civilised and usable as the 996. It really depends on what you're looking from for a car. I now own an M3 CSL which is even closer in feel to my old 993.
