Lamborghini's first car breaks cover

41 years ago, the 350GT made its first public outing

Tomorrow is the anniversary of the Lamborghini's first outing. On 30 October 1963, the Lamborghini 350GTV debuted at the Turin auto show. But Lamborghini had not completed the prototype in time for the deadline, and the 350GTV was presented with a crate of ceramic tiles in place of an engine.

With or without the engine, Lamborghini's first car was not particularly well received, and only one GTV was ever completed. But the former tractor-maker was not discouraged, and in 1964 the drastically redesigned 350GT (top) went into production, and Lamborghini managed to sell over 100 of the expensive cars.

The GT was a quiet and sophisticated high-performance vehicle, capable of achieving 155mph with a maximum 320hp. The elegant Lamborghini 350GT indeed provided a smoother ride than most of its Ferrari counterparts, and Ferruccio's old tractor factory, located just a few miles from the Ferrari factory, began constructing some of the most exotic cars the world had ever seen, such as the Miura (middle), the Espada, and the legendary Countach (bottom).

Sports car maker Ferruccio Lamborghini was born in Renazzo di Cento, Italy, on April 28, 1916. After studying mechanical engineering in Bologna, Lamborghini served as a mechanic for the Italian Army's Central Vehicle Division in Rhodes during World War II. Upon his return to Italy, he worked on converting military vehicles into agricultural machines, and, in 1948, began building and designing his own tractors.

His well-designed agricultural machinery proved a success, and with this prosperity Lamborghini developed an addiction for luxury sports cars. In the early 1960s, he purchased a Ferrari 250 GT, made just a few miles away in Enzo Ferrari's factory.

After encountering problems with the car, Ferruccio reportedly paid Enzo a visit, complaining to him about his new Ferrari's noisy gearbox. Legend has it that the great racing car manufacturer Ferrari responded in a patronising manner to the tractor-maker Lamborghini, inspiring the latter to begin development of his own line of luxury sports cars -- automobiles that could out perform any mass-produced Ferrari.

I must say that having owned a Diablo VT for a couple of years, there just is'nt a car today that can match the road presence of a Lambo. The styling & sound track that these cars emit is just mind blowing!
You just know your'e in a 'Special' car.
I used to get people from all ages giving me the sign. I even had a grown up bloke on his knees bowing!!! Lambos were all hand made & they didn't make thousands of them, that will all change now that the Germans have moved in.

The original 350GTV was a fantastic design (by that great, 'unknown' designer, Franco Scalione), which, IMHO, was not equalled by the production reworking. I think that Scalione deserves a proper retrospective - how 'bout it, Ted?

There's quite a lot about Scaglione on the Web -- this Google search seems to find quite a bit: www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=scaglione+designer

Muira is just the best looking car on the planet.

Does anyone have the EVO Supercar special magazine? there is a styling feature in the back which has a list of the 50 sexiest cars of all time as voted for by the worlds top car designers.

Muira is no 1 unsurprisingly. It mentiones a bloke who used to live in a railway arch in the East End of London and only had a bed, sink, cupboard, and a Muira.

Awesome looking car

Supercars....I've got this....I'm still trawling my way through it...but I've complicated it somewhat as I've just acquired "Driving Ambition".

Anyway.......now THAT!! is eccentric.

Lambo's are really very impressive. Ferraris are more 'common', they don't attract the same kind of attention.
A friend of mine has an Espada and a Countach 5000 S, and every time he has to fill that one up (and that is rather often ), people take pictures of the car. Or on the german Autobahn, even Mercs and Beemers go to the right to let him pass...
Great cars!
