This job is wrecking me.

Your life, your choices.
Sounds like you have the luxury of options from a financial point of view
Not sure why you are putting a contracting role ahead of your personal goals and your family?
Why MTFU for a role which is not taking you on a journey you wish to go on?
Just to prove that you can? I think you know you can do it, not sure why you ARE doing it?
Hopefully helpful...

My take on this is that your being there is delaying the inevitable. A plaster over a gaping wound. As you sound as though you are integral to the running of the company, yet the company is still circling the drain, if you removed yourself from the equation the company would go down the s
tter that bit quicker. If I was you, with no debt etc and not requiring the income, I would leave. You would probably be doing everyone there a favour in the long run, they can put the company to rest and everyone can find new jobs, maybe ones which are better for them.
Your new company interests that you have on the back burner, would there be any opportunities for any of the staff of the company? If so, you could look at taking them on, that could ease your conscience if you feel bad about people losing jobs.

Cheers, the sort of stuff I am looking to hear.
Sticking with things to the bitter end is one of my bad and good points. My wife, and my oldest mate both tell me my loyalty is one of my best traits. Sometimes though it is misplaced.

Quitting this job is the easy bit. The harder bit is deciding what to do after that:
I'm interested to know why you went back in the first place? Was it possibly because the life of a non-salaried self employed entrepreneur was just a bit too unstable and insecure, even though it looked tempting from a distance?
I suspect that if being independent was as great as you'd hoped, you'd have said "thanks, but no thanks" when they called you. And that whatever it is that's keeping you there, it isn't 'loyalty'.
Or maybe the siren call of being needed and wanted was irresistible? Especially if it caught you on a day when you were feeling a bit vulnerable?
Work out the answer to that, and you'll know what to do next. Good luck!

Bingo.EVEN if you would have a bit of hardship i.e. money problems it would be better to leave this place.
In your position however it seems like a bit of a no-brainer - notice in. Get on with your life.
Work to live, do not live to work.
How about set yourself a goal and stick to it. So either a time frame, or turning the company around. So either at a fixed period you leave, or you can't do what you'd like to do in a six month period and leave. That way you can say that you've tried and you pocket some extra cash and can get through the job knowing your leave date.

Alternatively look at it from another direction; the business is going down the tubes and you know it inside out; do you know enough about it/have enough confidence in the business case to turn it around yourself, i.e. buy it either now or after the administrator comes in? Being your own boss might be a better motivator, although the hours are likely to be even longer!
