Changed my diff oil.

Boy am I getting clutch lock up BIG STYLE. I thought the rear end was going to drop out.

I've now got redline heavy shock proof and a full can of friction modifier, but its still clanking.....

More friction modifier to be added.

The fluid that came out was as clean as could be ----- but something of the diff is casuing the lock up at the moment.

Anyone else had similar problems?????

Timing of your post couldn't be better.

Just got my friction modifier from red line to stop my diff chattering. Went to put it in today but found the oil is anything but clean!

The oil is dark grey. Pretty sure its not steel as there is no shine, i'm assuming its friction plate material. Needless to say im not impressed. Only done 15,000 miles.

Was planning to change oil tommorrow. Going to have to cos the oil in it is in such a state!

We will see what happens. Currently it doesn't always lock up.

What grade was the oil? Holden service manual calls up 80W 140 grade.

Speak to Gavin at RedLine. VERY helpful

Heavy duty shock proof diff oil is what we've gone for.

I think a little more use with the modififer will ease things, but just in case I have some more modifier available.

If your diff oil is dirty, change it - mine was very clean, but now I've changed it the bloody thing is clunking ahhhh

Whilst on oils...I would like to say that Castrol Transmax Z is excellent for the gearboxes. I had some put in yesterday and it has made the gear changes much better and smoother.

It might be worth talking to some of the TVR bods - the diff unit is the same as the Cerbera so their current flavour of the month diff oil should work nicely in the HSV/Monaro.

Jagsy - the standard diff doesn't use clutches, it's a cone-type mechanism so it's unlikely to chatter - if you've fitted the aftermarket KAAZ diff then it's a different story. It's possible that the pinion bearing has failed and that more damage is being done - I'd be getting it checked over carefully.

Most GM cars require the specific GM additive. I know from many posts on LS1.com that the GM additive was the only one that worked properly in the Camaro but I don't know about the Holden diff.

SOUNDS TO ME AS THE CONES ARE PICKING UP ,THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE STEEL CONE GETS DIRT OR METEL FROM THE OTHER BRONZE CONE,IF YOU HAVENT BUT THE BTR MODIFER IN THE OIL THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS.

Thanks guys for the input.

I've put more friction modifier in tonight. I've added in stages, each time the noise was reducing.

The last amount I put in, the initial test going round and round gave an occaisional knock. I then drove approx 20 miles and fingers crossed it has stopped.

I'll post more after the weekend.

Finally changed my oil (twice) this weekend.

Used oil from Redline. They really are so helpful. why can't more companies be like this?

Anyway, can't really be sure that its made a difference yet as its been wet all day. It certainly locks up alright in the wet but the test will be in the dry. Not heard any clunks yet either.

The oil i drained out is off to the lab for analysis to see if i can get an idea of what damage has been done.

Well I've done a good few hundred miles this weekend.

The noise has NEARLY gone. The frequency of is happening has dropped significantly, just know and then, but when it does it - wow big noise!!!!

I'm now only getting the occasional clunk. Seems to lock up OK, (only had dryish roads so far) except when the diff is still cold, when it appears to do nothing at all.

Is this normal?? Or is it nearly knackered?

Well, got the results of my oil anaysis and it don't look good.

For those that want it technical:

Iron 963 ppm
copper 15 ppm
Zinc 126 ppm
Silicon 75 ppm
Chromium 7 ppm

Clearly, with all that iron something is wearing, but what?

How does the LSD cone arrangement work an what is it made of. Anyone know????

I'm hoping, given that it was chattering, its the LSD thats taken the damage rather than the gears, so i can keep driving it for now, though there is some chromium in the sample, so some gear wear has taken place.

Maybe i should not have taken a sample!

Well, the good news is, 3 months and 4000 miles later, the diff oil is still spotless. Looks like i got away with that.

Never clunks at all. May have put a touch too much additive in as occasionally it wont lock up straight away.

Morris Lubricants make their Lodexol 80w/140 diff. oil to the spec. that BTR require for their diffs. I've used this with no additives etc. for 4 years with no problems whatsoever.
