Old tax return
Discussion
Hopefully some tax experts around, need a second opinion on the below please.
I started working onshore in the UK and paying tax from December of 2008 prior to this I was working offshore and paying income tax in Romania. It seems that my salary for 2008/2009 was cumulated , flagging up HMRC as I've not paid my tax. Basically on the last payslip of 2008/2009 it shows my total salary for the year but looks like I've been paying tax for 3 months.
The online submission for 2008/2009 is now closed so I need to submit my self assessment by post. How can I explain to HMRC the situation I was in ? A few years have passed, only been notified now, and I dont have the P45/P60, only the last payslip for that year...

Based on what you are saying, your total income for tax year 2008/09 was made up of Foreign Income up to 31 December 2008 and UK Income from 1 January 2009 to 5 April 2009I started working onshore in the UK and paying tax from December of 2008 prior to this I was working offshore and paying income tax in Romania. The last payslip of the year from your UK employer (month ended 31 March 2009?) should show most of the information that you will need for entering on the 2008/09 self assessment tax return
Name of Employer
Address of Employer
Any UK PAYE tax Reference for the employer
Your UK NI number
Gross Salary you received in the tax year ended 5 April 2009
Tax Deducted by the employer up to 31 March 2009
PAYE tax code used by your employer as at 5 April 2009.
I don't know what Roumanian tax rules dictate but I expect you received the equivalent of a P45 when you left Roumanian employment.
Were you a UK tax resident for all of 2008/09 or just from when you came back in January 2009.
Bear in mind that determining a person's tax residency status is not straightforward. Just because you might THINK you weren't a UK tax resident does not mean you actually were actually a non-UK tax resident.
just to confuse matters a bit more guys, thanks for your replies btw, i am talking about the same employer. In December 2008 I went from working offshore for them, while living in Romania, to working in Aberdeen, office based. Unfortunately, to make it even more interesting, the company was bought over and the new company does not have the records as "I was not paid by their system" at the time. Also the person in charge of payroll at the time left so no way of tracking old info.
