Back in 1993 Porsche presented a Boxter concept car on Detroit Motor Show.

I really looked forward for the car to be build, but they discarded everything which made the car sexy.
The available Boxter is IMHO complete compared with that concept car

(sorry to all Boxter-friends)

does look a lot better bar the coloured indicators - the revamp is a big disappointment but then they're not reknown for changing things much..911...

the US market ruined it - thanks to the yanks it had to have a boot big enough for 2 golf bags. Ruined the short overhangs and cuteness

I recall being very impressed with this when it was on show at that year's motor show. So much so I bought the Maisto die-cast version.

It's certainly more interesting than the current Boxster, though I wouldn't say no to one.

Whilst I agree with you that the concept car looked better, whats wrong with having a reasonable sized boot? Although I disagree with you that the boxter now has one
I don't think the 2 are necessarily related - I think the Tamora for example would look better with a longer overhang...(cute would probably be overstating it though)

cheers,
Craig

As I have not found any good pictures from that concept-Boxter -esp. the interior - on the web, I just scanned the full first original brochure from Detroit:

I don't want to post als pics here, as they have 760kb-ish.
If you'd like to get them sent by email - just drop me a line via my profile

Am I the only one to prefer the production model?

No, I prefer it too.

Actually, apropos concept cars (and this Boxster WAS a concept), not that many actually see the light of day in all their concept glory.

In fact, the only one I can think of from the recent past is the Audi TTS, which bears an uncanny resemblance to the TT.

Bodo, at least the basics were there - look at the first F Type concept - they moved the engine for goodness sake.

Greg, I argree here, but the difference between the production Boxter and the concept car is equal to the difference between a Countach kit car and the real thing.

I understand that the cost difference of this comparison would be equal, too.

As the concept-Boxter is quite unpopular to the wide mass of Boxter buyers, Boxter-sales benefit from marketing strategy - other than on 914/924/944/968, the Boxter has 6cyl, midengine and looks similar to the real thing: 911.

Why doesn't automobile industry present stunning concept cars and even top them with production cars?

I think of the Alfa 156 - former concept-Alfas did not implicate to be realistic, so the 156 was not burdend by expectations. And stunned with its presentation.
