For the amount of time and aggro versus what you might get, I'd say it's not worth it. Next time you change jobs try not to leave a gap
Bandit - if you were out of work and therefore presumably earning £0, why did you have to pay 40% tax?
At a guess, his tax code was one of the special "Powerfully Built Director" ones.

I think the important definition is whether you resigned, or were made redundant/fired/contract expired.
If it's the former then I don't think you can claim for 12 weeks (or that used to be the case), if it's the latter then you can claim, but for the grief involved I'd say it's not worth the effort.

I lost my job part way through a tax year, JSA was seen as income and therefore taxed as such. (Note I didn't find this out until filling in my tax return 6 months later!)

I was out of work for 6 weeks, I spent about 4 hours in the job center and received about £130 after tax.
Definitely not worth the bother!
