Gerrard,able to win matches with individual brilliance and able to inspire his team mates to lift themselves in a way few players can.lampard,possibly one of the best midfield goalscorers ever,knows where the net is,invaluable,lacking severely in other areas though.
then we have scholes,not a goalscoring machine from midfield like lampard,not capable of the inspiration gerrard sometimes gives ,but able to control and dictate entire football matches against any calibre of opposition.
when tevez was at city he was asked, 'you've played with messi and ronaldo ..who's better ? his answer 'scholes'.
All three can score goals but Gerard can control games and drag the performance levels of his whole team up when required. His range of passing, engine/work ethic and pure ability in most areas gets my vote. Scholes was fantastic in his day but have you seen him try to tackle? Lampard as someone mentioned is a great goal scorer but lacks a few other midfield tricks. There's good arguments for all three to get a vote to be honest, all greats of the modern game.

The myth about Scholes inability to time a tackle needs addressing
The sod timed them perfectly - to cause maximum damage with minimal likelihood of a booking. Should have been sent off on numerous occasions but owing to excessively lenient refs / 'it's Scolesey, he can't really tackle and he isn't malicious' schtick, managed a whole career of getting away with it!
I still voted for him though!

My vote goes to Scholes.
Gerrard was quality, but there have been many box to box quality players over the years. There have been very few that have had the vision, grace, footballing brain and quality of Scholesy.
Lampost doesn't deserve to be on the same poll. A very good player, who would walk into most teams, but a true great?? hmmmmm
Of this era only other midfielders I put in would be Keane or possibly Vierra.

Running is for chumps. If you can read the game as well as him, there is no need.I think if you took a poll of players who played against all 3 in their prime, the poll would be even more top heavy.
In fact myself & friends have spoken to 4 or 5 EPL players, and they all say Scholesy was the best they ever played against.

Take away penalties scored for club and country, now add up goals scored for England and for club in League, Europe and English cups then look again at most goals scored in play by an English midfield player.And Lampard almost 50% more than Gerrard?

Should I only count headers and volleys? What about tap ins...they're too easy so best get rid of them as well.
