Did first sportive today - only 40 miles but found it really tough. I don't ride too often and the 4,721 ft of elevation hurt, coupled with really nasty, wet and windy conditions.

I still hit a wall at 30 miles of having no energy despite having little and often and had to scoff some starburst and a double decker to get going again.

However worst thing was bad sciatica in my right side. Felt like the saddle was nipping it against the bone. It resulted in a numb / painful leg / back on any sort of hill.

Didn't have any padded cycling shorts on but could it also be a bike set-up / saddle issue?

Jimbo.

Pain can be caused my all manner of things. However, this:

Didn't have any padded cycling shorts on...

...might have paid a BIG part.

Start here. They're not expensive. Then work on from that.
