First Road Bike Advice

Just looking for some high level advice on the issue of buying my first road bike, hopefully you guys can assist.

Always been a cyclist in some form since I was a kid (BMX and mountain bike mainly). I have spent the past year getting in some miles on the tarmac on a budget singlespeed road bike , and have got the bug for road riding.

I am now looking to progress onto a 'proper' road bike, hopefully spending sub-£1000 to acquire my steed. Is there any general advice about what to look for? I don't need / want a 'current tech' model and notice that many retailers offer huge discounts on last years models. I'm rather un-ergonomic (lanky 6'3") so will a fitting be required. Any brands to go for or avoid for best bang for buck? Any other pointers?
