North Italy to Slovenia 10 day road trip

Hi folks
Has anyone does this a similar trip?
I have friends in Slovenia and really tempted to do a 10 day road trip to visit the passes and then head right to Slovenia.
Not sure where to start (Venice maybe?) but I remember reading a great write up on here from some chap who hired Fiat 500s and bezzed around the Passes on the border of North Italy - I'd be looking to do the same as I'm without my own decent car currently. Planning on 4 of us going and hiring 2 500s and taking the Walkie-Talkies with us
Any recommendations of trusted car hire places / places to visit (or avoid!) in either North Italy or Slovenia? Anyone know of places that'd hire out MX5s or similar in Italy? I can only find high-end rentals or Europe car type places who only seem to have SLKs.
Would be looking to go next summer some point after Le Mans so late June / early July
