Cycling with 3 & 1 year olds

Would like to start going out as a family.
What is the safest and cheapest way to do it?
1 year old walking and very balanced and was thinking of some kind of seat behind one of us.
3 year old is nearly 4, rides happily with stabilisers and we are thinking of taking them off soon - tag along maybe?

Could I manage them both and leave the wife free? She has not cycled for years and is a lot slower than me!

Job done!

I found that the cross bar mounted seat allowed more interaction with my children, many miles covered with this combo.

Great fitness for you as we'll as you are pedalling quite a load!!! Which means the wife can keep up.

We've started doing something similar, only difference being ours are 6 and 2. The 2 year old goes in a rear seat (she's almost 3 now so it made sense) on my wife's bike and six year old goes on his bike. As suggested by Frenchda, the trailgator is great. I let my 6 year old ride his bike then tow him along when he gets tired. It's good exercise and as said allows slower riders to keep up. For your one year old a rear seat could work but the kangaroo seat is probably better, might be worth trying out both.

We have the Kangaroo, and it's great - albeit a little pricey.

Slightly O/T, but a chap passes our house every day, taking his daughter to nursery, I assume.

He was using a back pack / hiking type seat initially, and has recently changed to a trailer - something like http://www.tesco.com/direct/spokey-joe-single-chil...

The amazing aspect is that he's doing this on a Brompton fold up.

With the 'tow bar' could we remove her stabilisers straight away - does it offer that rigidness?

I suppose she could keep the stabisers on but i imagine they would get trashed quite quickly!

Will go and talk to some bike shops and try some - thanks for the advice!
