I took a mate to collect his car TT from a secure store on Sunday night after he came home from his holiday and it seems to have developed an odd problem.

The engine turned over fine and after a period of letting it warm up we set off home. After about 5 minutes, the ABS and Traction Control warning lights came on and we both pulled over. The engine was re-started and the lights went out as usual.

This time it lasted about 10 minutes before the warning lights came back on again and we pulled over, restarted and bingo - the lights were out again.

This happened once more before he got home. Each time the ABS and traction control are both disengaged - tested at a low speed in local carpark.

The car was taken to an Audi dealership yesterday who plugged it into a diagnostics machine which gave it the all clear, then on the way home, the lights came on again and the car was taken back to the dealership.

To cut a long story short, they had it all afternoon and still couldn't find anything wrong. Last night on the way down the M1 the lights came on 3 times (pulled over and re-started each time) and Audi seems to think there's nothing wrong.

Does anyone have any idea's or experienced the same problem

I have heard lots of reports of electrical gremlins with TT's. Depends on the age, but it seems that they suffer them rather than the rest of the Audi range. I too have had intermittent faults on VW/Audi cars which the engine management diagnostics have reported to be fine - VW/Audi dealers then simply say that the electronics are fine - which is utter crud.

Take it back and insist that someone drives it around and dont bother with the diagnostics. You will probably find that it will be a fuse, connection or short somewhere in the system (most fairly simple to fix), but the diagnostics only report on the current situation rather than what happened before...

Well, actually that statement isnt quite right, because they are supposed to keep a log. But it seems that the VW/Audi system seems not to store as much as other contemporary systems - BMW for example is excellent.

Cheers,

Paul

Best bet is the big multiplug connector where the wiring loom meets the ECU.. sounds like that being loose would be the problem.

That said, I had a practically identical problem on my Primula - turned out to be my battery+ terminal had worked its way loose. Quick tightening of the nut and all sorted.

never had any 'leccy problems with our TT FWIW...

Could be a dusty ABS sensor. ABS sensors often double up as traction control sensors on some types of car. I have had ABS failures in the past due to this problem and once the sensor has been cleaned, no problem. Dust could easilly show up as an intermittent fault, which is why it wouldn't show up as a fault code on ECU diagnostics. Just a thought, worth getting it checked.

Best just to get a good auto electrician if you can't sort it with the suggestions. If they are good they are specialised in their work, not like the muppet at the VW garage.

Would you believe my Boxster S did EXACTLY the same thing. Reckon they must have a common box somewhere...!
