Not sure if we've had this before, might have done....but I';ve just received the sms from Du to register my number.
Why? When I took out the mobile they took my passport copy and visa, inside leg, great-grandmum's maiden name, the whole 9 yards. Why can't they review their records?

Stupid question.... can I just buy a PAYG type SIM at the airport or do I have to go through all the rigmarole?

They did the same thing a number of months ago were they said you have something like 5 days to register or they will cur you off. Nothing ever happened.

You can buy a PAYG sim no problems, they will take a photo of your passport information page and that's it.
I bought several of them when we were first setting up the company here in Dubai before all our visas were processed, no issues at all.

If you get stuck I have a spare USB dongle that you're welcome to borrow... it's a PAYG one that you just top up with normal top up cards.
