Ok Guys, contemplating on buying one of these, pointers on the best version (I was thinking of the metal strap version with heaslite crystal - as close as to the moon watch) would be much appreciated.

What sort of £££s am I looking at and would it be better to buy it in the EU when I am visiting say Germany?

All tips would be welcome.

Many thanks.

If you want the nearest to the Moonwatch then it has to be the hesalite and manual wind.

As for where to buy, standard reply is speak to Dom H on here first.
That's who I bought mine from and I was very happy with the whole experience.

The reference you're looking for is 3570.50.00.

That will get you hesalite and manual wind.
When I bought mine earlier this year the UK price was £2880 and the airport price was £2400. I don't know if they standardise prices across the Eurozone, but in Austria it was marginally more expensive than the UK. I would imagine that it's more expensive than the UK in most Euro countries.

Get one at the airport. Work out which airport and terminal you'll be passing through and call the appropriate shop a week in advance to ask them to get one for you.

Great watch, i love mine. Any dealer will give you a big chunk off the list price if you ask them nicely such that its often no cheaper at the airport.

Thank you all, is Dom H on here? Does he own a store?

Regarding the second hand one, how do you know its genuine? And I will ask nicely for a discount biggrin

You buy from a reputable source and do your research (or you just do a bit of research and take a gamble).

How else would anyone ever buy vintage watches? biggrin

If my Speedmaster's a fake, it's good enough to fool Omega!

I bought my Omega Speedmaster Professional from Dom H. It is the version with the sapphire front and back (3753.50) though, not the hesalite version.

Excellent service and reasonable discount compared to elsewhere.

There's a good case for this being the ONE to get, imo.

Funny business isn't it... This one brings it bang up to date and makes it wearable every day. But the hesalite, although fragile, gives it a different look and feel and is of course the 'correct' Moonwatch if there is such a thing smile

For that sort of money though, couldn't you get close to buying a pre-moon cal.321 though..? You could when I looked last...

I didn't say it was a case I'd succumbed to smile

I'm not hung up on the details, I'm just as happy with an 1861 as a 321, personally, so my Speedmaster's an unexciting 1997 one and that's just fine with me.

On the other hand, I'd agree that the hesalite does give it that 'vintage' feel, which the sapphire lacks. If it was my ONLY watch, though, I'd probably prefer a sapphire sandwich (the mechanism is, imo, far too lovely to hide away on a watch with insignificant water resistant and the 1863's even lovelier).

Fortunately it's not biggrin

I have one of these:http://www.chrono24.com/en/omega/speedmaster-moonphase-chronograph-35765000--id2347354.htm
Display back and moon phase stuff. I prefer the date on a dial rather than in a window.
Really love it. Bought it used on the Bay about 6 months ago for just shy of £2000
Keeps great time and I look upon the winding as a worthwhile trade off for the view of the action.

Cool - Never seen one of those before.

You sound like you think of the winding as something that needs compensation, I consider a virtue biggrin

I have a number of automatics, but I always think of it as a burden on the mechanical movement both visually and in terms of strain and wind feel.

on a slight speedy tangent; can all of the models interchange to a strap?

seen that a few of you guys vary between the 2 and it's something i've never considered on any of mine. but the speedy looks great on either. at £2880 RRP they just seem incredibly good value when all the other Omegas are going through the roof.

so any particular models or are they all versatile.

i do have the snoopy but that is in it's box tucked up for a rainy day.

I am thinking of putting my Omega Double Eagle on a rubber strap - any suggestions on where to source one or what the prices are?
I am sure I can get one from an AD at a hefty cost

You can change straps on all Speedmasters (well, except a few obscure 70's models, I guess), and they are very versatile.
There is next to no chance of picking up a fake Speedmaster, as the fakes a -obviously- fakes. If in doubt, post a link to the watch in question here, and you'll get a swift verdict.

The only "fake" issue with Speedmasters are vintage Speedmasters with bezels, crowns, pushers and the like which are incorrect for the vintage. There is a whole host of pitfalls here, but if you're not looking to buy and old (1970 and before) this should be of no concern. Vintage Speedmasters are still relatively affordable in comparison to Submariners and other iconic watches.

Is the he salute crystal fragile? It doesn't seem it to me.

It's very easy on the 3570.50 to alternate between the bracelet and strap!

And from what I've seen, fakes are very easy to spot. If you've ever seen a real one, let alone worn one you'll know instantly

The Hesalite isn't particularly fragile but scratches easier than the quartz.

Polishes up a treat with Polywatch or similar though.

Thanks. And sorry for my mistypes - I've just gone from a BlackBerry to an iPhone!
But it's replaced free of charge every service anyway. Mine seems far more resilient to scratches than I had expected.

ETA: When I say "free of charge", I mean that it's included in the cost of a service.
