How many people on here have a second job? How do you cope?
I've had to accept a chance in a line of work I've never done on a part time basis just to make life a bit easier with money. I'll now be working 7 days a week 8 hours a day with my partner working 16-24 hours a week as well, in amongst all this we have Childcare to Juggle and would like to see each other at some point as well!
Its not going to be easy but needs must!!

I wouldn't take that on that heavy a commitment of a second job. My second job is as a reservist, so one evening a week, and some weekends. It varies wildly how much time it can take up (in august and september I will have had 5 days where I've not been working), sometimes it'll only be one weekend a month.
The main difference it makes in my life is that I have to keep on top of my admin when I have the chance. The girlfriend is pretty independent which helps, but I wouldnt be with a needy person anyway so its not been a factor.

I work full time and my wife runs a couple of ecommerce websites while also looking after our children. She does around 25-30 hours a week, mostly evenings when the children are in bed. I work with her in the evenings so can easily clock up 80-90 hours some weeks.
My ‘day job' is office based and quite stressful, so working at home at my own pace with the TV on in the background and not taking orders from someone it doesn’t feel like work.
Our household would just survive on my income alone so everything my wife and I earn outside of that is family money if that makes sense. That makes it feel like it’s a choice.
Working 8 hours a day 7 days a week will be tuff but perhaps not as tuff as the alternative, you have my respect sir.

Cheers Guys, if its wasn't really necessary right now I'd probably have passed it up but it could be opening doors to other thing for me as well as seeing us all through a tough time after getting behind with money when I lost my job earlier this year and while I don't have much of a pipeline for sales in my main job.
I'm not shy when it comes to a bit of hard work so getting my hands dirty on the weekends will be good as well, However 80/90 hours a week???
Worst part of it all is that a Saturday was my time with the wee man watching the F1, he's 9 months old, these early stage are key to his develpoment/training if I've to get him into that McLaren/Red Bull/Lotus/Mercedes seat one day!!!!

ds...... it's not fair on the people who actually work these long hours, resulting in more tax being taken from them to fund the lifestyle of Jeremy Kyle's audience/guests!

Mine too.For the record, I am knackered after one weekend, but if your ever enjoying some Sugar Free Tesco Ginger Beer then I helped Make that over the weekend!! 8000+ cases of 24 cans on Sunday alone!!! Those machines are something else...
Since I've been working, I've always had to have a second job to get by. The key to it being successful is doing something that you enjoy, and preferably get cash pay/paid differently to your first job (e.g. if you're paid monthly, a paid weekly/nightly second job makes a huge huge difference to your finances).
Naturally it's not that straightforward, but for me doing delivery work of an evening has served me brilliantly, much better than doing nights in between day shifts etc.

It's working in a factory on a Can line for a major manufacturer of foods and juice products. been messed about a bit by the agency and been losing shifts so not as hard work as i thought, also took them 4 weeks to pay me for my first weekends work.

I'd love to be able to answer you on that but still not seen a pay slip from them either, useless buggers! it's one concern i have had but all conversations i've had with people leave it open ended and still unconfirmed.

No you don't get double taxed but you pay the whole tax.
Everyone has an amount that they can earn before tax apply's for simple lets say you can earn 10k a year before that and that (again for simpleness) the tax rate is 25%.
So normally you earn lets say 15k pa, you would only have 25% tax on the 5k because you are tax free for the first 10k.
So if you were to take a second job you would most likely pay the full 25% on the whole lot from the second job. Because 15k from job one has absorbed your 10k tax free allowance, the second job will earn beyond that.
Any tax experts feel free to correct me, but I'm pretty sure thats how it goes.

8 Hours a day, 7 days a week? I would love the luxury of all that time off. At the moment I am working away from home, 13 hours a day, every day - 84 hours a week. I have been since the 15th of July. In that time I have had 6 days off (2 sets of 3 days).
However, well done for actually doing something about your unfortunate financial woes. The only way is up and the long hours worked will pay off in the end. Good luck.
