I'm doing the Wiggle Steeplechase sportive tomorrow, 95 miles. My longest ride so far is 60 miles, so will be a challenge for me! Anyone else doing it?

I have signed up for the free loan of a GarminEdge 500 or 800 (can't remember which) for the ride. My question is: What would I need to do to get the route info from this onto my Strava account? i.e. Would it need connecting to my laptop to get the data off it, and if so, do I need any specific software beforehand?

I would like to use this instead of my iphone, as the battery on the phone will struggle if I also use it as a camera etc, but I would also like to update my Strava account so I don't lose the ride info. Any idea?

go to www.strava.com and log in with your phone account details

you will need a (mini I think) USB cable to your laptop which would need to be networked to upload directly

an alternative is use your file explorer in the carpark to get the TCX from the Garmin to the laptop then go home and upload this to strava

To get the ride data off my Garmin Edge 200 it's as simple as plugging the device in to the computer via USB. Then going to 'My Computer' and clicking the Garmin icon. You can then navigate to a folder containing your activities and copy that to your pc or upload it directly to Strava.

Are you allowed to take the garmin home with you then?

ETA - paperbag I've just realised that you're taking your laptop with you. Ignore me.

Just a quick note about your iphone. If you turn wifi, Bluetooth, 3g, and data off, I managed to get 10 hours recording out of my 4s.

Also. Halfords are selling the Bryton Rider 20H (the one with the heart rate monitor) for £89. Apparently they'll be in stock next week.

Thanks for all the replies.

Even you, BerksJack! wink

Yeah, I was contemplating taking the laptop, but didn't know if it would be possible without the Garmin software etc.

Will have a look at the Halfords deal - as much as I like the look of the Garmin Edge, not sure I would ever justify an Edge 810, which is obviously the only one to go for!

In my opinion the 810 has been dumbed down to allow for the next easy evolution
Its features are tantalising but Id hoped it would have real time tracking of your mates to its own display, not just yourself to a laptop/PC, which cant be too difficult as the other tracking stuff and connectivity is under the bonnet somewhere

And besides it weighs 40g more than my 500
